The Dauphin School Board voted Friday night to observe November 11 as a school holiday after it was included in the 200 day year estimate. Members noted limited funds and discussed equipment needs, overcrowding in transport, and purchasing spare desks from a contractor.
After 27 years with the forestry branch, District Forester A. Bainbridge retired on Nov. 1. His successor is E. A. Koons, formerly senior forest ranger at Dauphin and Swan River. Bainbridge, who arrived in Canada in 1902, spent a career in timber cruising, forestry supervision in Saskatchewan, and later reforestation efforts. He notes fires as a major concern and plans travel before settling into retirement.
Ted Skwarok a 20 year old switchman for the C N R died from injuries after a yard accident at Gladys street crossing in Dauphin Ontario. He was promoted recently to switchman and was working with engine Wm Staranchuk. Inquest found he was crushed between couplings while trying to connect cars. He leaves a mother four sisters five brothers and a brother killed in World War II.
John Gardner a Dauphin General Hospital board member was chosen for the executive committee of the Manitoba Hospital Association at the annual meeting held last week in Winnipeg.
A gang of ten experienced men arrived Tuesday to begin the hydro line project to Valley River and Sifton. The crew will expand as local workers are hired and poles will take about three weeks to erect due to rocky terrain. Power should reach the towns by year end with possible council tweaks if lighting falls short. Bulbs between Second and Third avenues north were upgraded from 300 to 500 watts, eight bulbs in total, costing about $20 more per year per bulb.
Two flood lights placed at the Main Street rail crossing on a trial basis to illuminate passing boxcars. If approved, the method will be used on Gladys Street. Data shows daily maximum and minimum temperatures accompanying the test.
Nomination day is set for Tuesday November 12 with two retiring councillors, S Solomon and J Puchalski, indicating possible entries. J A Yurkin undecided and D E McLean unavailable. Rural ratepayers nominate Cecil Durston, Mike Szewczyk, and W L Kennedy for the Large Area board, while S S Hunt will be nominated from Dauphin.
At 5 a.m. Saturday a fire at R. F. H. Abersons farm destroyed a 1937 Pontiac and a garage. A tractor nearby was saved with help from a neighbor. Origin unknown. Loss covered by insurance. Fire brigade arrived promptly to prevent spread to the woodpile and home.
Fit Lt Jack G Blinkhorn is decorated with the Croix de Guerre with silver star by Lieut G McWilliams at No 2 air command Winnipeg. The French air ministry cites his two Indo China pickup missions behind enemy lines aiding the resistance. He evacuated wounded, women, children, and a senior resistance commander.
Fred S. Zaplitny, Dauphin federal member, was elected provincial chairman at the CCF convention in Brandon last Saturday. He also became a national council delegate as Dauphin CCF reorganized in the Oddfellows hall. Officers for the coming year: president Thomas Walker, vice president Frank Goshulak, secretary-treasurer M. W. Cryderman.
Two masked men robbed the Dauphin hotel at 3 a.m. taking 38 50 from the till after a brief bluff. Clerk Archie McArthur described one gunman as 30 to 35 with dark complexion and a German sword-like revolver. Police were alerted as the suspects fled toward the town’s south end.
In Dauphin during October eight chickenpox cases in town and four in rural areas were recorded along with one measles case in town and three in rural municipalities. Two mumps cases were reported in Dauphin. An amendment to the public school act requires teachers to notify the health officer when a pupil has a contagious disease or has been exposed.
