Water Safety Classes Planned Here Again

The Rotary club hones plans for a two week Water Safety course at Ochre Reach starting July 2. The program targets beginners six years and older with a testing period and open enrollment for residents. Instructors from Winnipeg supervise daily sessions with senior and intermediate levels offered in evening classes.

Local Air Cadets Parade at Dauphin Airport Friday

Fourth annual parade of the Dauphin squadron of the Canadian Air Cadets will be held at Dauphin airport on Friday May 3 at 7 pm. Forty six cadets will parade and Cadet James Baxter will command the inspection parade with WoC LA Hall inspecting. A RCAF Joe air display and RCAP band from arches OW will feature.

1957 DCTI Graduates Honored At Convocation

At Friday's convocation in the DMCC Industrial building 126 students received diplomas. Gail Gowanlock won the Governor General's medal. Rotary and other scholarships were awarded to Mehin Krwas Archie Prestayko Marilyn Brander and others. Notable prizes went to Kathleen Fair Joyce Bertnick Vern Rampton Joan Gaebhar and Gayle Roth.

Gail Gowanlock Wins Governor General Medal

Gail Gowanlock earns the 1987 Governor General Medal for her strong scholastic record and active role at LCTI. She served as class president freshman year, was sports representative most years, captained the 1955-56 girls basketball team, and contributed in music through the Glee club and school band as a tenor saxophonist.

Dauphin Council approves industrial development committee setup

Town council adopts new by law establishing an Industrial Development Committee with five members two from council two from the chamber of commerce and one member at large. The panel will study town growth and advise on fire, water, and infrastructure needs. The engineer and town secretary named to roles, with the director of industrial development for Manitoba as an ex officio member. Grants and maintenance funds for local services reviewed.

Wrens Return Shine At Dauphin Lake Beach Opening

Mr. Tom Locke of the Lands branch reports wrens have returned to Dauphin Lake after years of tracking. A low spring water level rose after rains making beaches usable at Dauphin Beach. The lands branch plans a public beach near Methley north of Ste. Rose for picnics and fishing families, restricted to public use.

Band To Present Outdoor Concerts This Week

A band announces a trio of outdoor concerts next week. Performances are set for June 4 at Emerson School grounds, June 5 at the hospital grounds, and June 6 in Vermilion Park beginning around 7:30 pm. Citizens are invited to attend.

George Dauphin and Jaycees back regional road event

George Dauphin and the Jaycees sponsor the regional road-e-o with residents rallying behind him to win an all expenses paid trip to London Ontario for the Canadian championship. George and his brother Wallly will fly to Winnipeg for the weekend with Imperial OU Ltd covering costs. Saturday features a written test in traffic obstacle course and in traffic tests with awards announced at a Royal Alexandra hotel dinner.

CADM Moves to 730 Frequency Seen as Key Step Forward

A. T. Warnock notes CKDM’s switch to 730 kHz will widen coverage across Manitoba including northern towns Swan River The Pas Lynn Lake Monk Lake with a 225 ft tower and expanded transmitter site. Dauphin station began 1951 on 1230 Hz later 1050 Hz and now 730 Hz with CBC approval and 24 hour service.

Decoration Day Parade Marks Annual Observance

A large parade marked Decoration Day with five color guards from Brandon Neepawa Mc Creary Ste Rose and Grandview. The Cenotaph service was led by John W McCalum and Rev Donald G Ray with wreaths laid by J A Frke. Veterans and citizens later visited Riverside cemetery for a veterans’ plot wreath ceremony.

CPA Service Began Here Ten Years Ago

An old airport committee plan marked June 2 1947 for a reception of the first CPA plane. The Winnipeg Dauphin The Pas Flin Flon line now abandoned along with The Pas Churchill and Flin Flon Lynn Lake routes. TransAir applied to take over these three lines and Ro l p Turner praised council. Council supported TransAir's application.

Chest X ray survey in town starts this week

Mobile chest X ray unit begins town visits with receptionists assigned for sessions May 30 to June 4. Appointments at Smith-Jackson and Henderson schools, town hall, and various hours. Committee led by Mrs A W McLaren to send appointment cards to residents.

Dauphin Fair Opens July 11 With Official Ceremony

Minister C. El Shuttleworth of Manitoba accepts invitation from the Dauphin Agricultural Society to officially open the 1957 Summer Exhibition and Race Meet the evening of Thursday July 11. The fair runs July 11 12 and 13 returning to a Thursday to Saturday schedule after the war years.
