Rescuers and trapped miners emerged from the Acadian coal mine after a perilous hour long effort. Dan Heighton and the 130 man crew fought rising water and a jammed door as splintered timbers blocked their exit. Authorities report completion around 2 p.m. with heavy floods blamed on recent rains.
Canada and the United States draft an agreement to construct and operate the DEW line in the Canadian Arctic with US personnel and funding totaling about 250 million dollars. Work began in spring and will take about two years, with Canada reserving the right to assume control on notice.
Nine plays have been entered for the provincial drama festival to be staged in the town hall on June 2, 3 and 4. Local entries include Nobody Sleeps by Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute and Andrew McMurty Immigrant by the Dauphin Little Theatre. The program lists titles and participating groups from Dauphin, Bowsman, Swan River, Portage la Prairie, Manitou, and Manitoba Normal School, among others. The festival will feature adjudicator Wood and notes the editor Mr Morriss as reviewer and drama advocate.
Five nursing students completed three years of training at the Dauphin General Hospital and received diplomas in a 14th annual graduation at the Dauphin First United Church. Verna Usick won the Canadian Nurse award for most progress, with diplomas presented by Mrs. S. E. McLean. Dr. C. C. Wright gave the address.
Agricultural representative Dave Hill reported seeding in the Dauphin district is more advanced than in the past two years with well drained soils showing progress. He noted heavier clay areas are only just started and farmers are clearing wild oats before sowing.
The Dauphin technical and collegiate institute will hold graduation exercises Friday May 27 at 8 p.m. in the DMCC industrial building. The 1955 class totals 137 graduates, the largest ever, with 40 in grade XII and other totals across third year academic agricultural commercial industrial homemaking and grade XI. The event marks the first use of the DMCC industrial building for commencement with capacity for 1,000 attendees.
Faye Barschel and Nick Prokopchuk won the grade 8 history speech prizes in a closely fought Smith-Jackson Home and School sponsored competition held Friday May 20 in the new Smith-Jackson auditorium. Runners-up were Gwen Hampton and Ken Porter.
S J Heggie succeeds D H Sneddon as manager of the Dauphin branch of the Canadian Bank of Commerce. Heggie arrives after nine years as Stonewall branch manager and a 32 year banking career in Canada. Sneddon retires after six years in Dauphin and 42 years in Saskatchewan banking including WWI service.
The Manitoba division of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association elected its executive at the Winnipeg meeting held May 12 13. T M Beveridge Norwood Press Helen Marsh Dauphin Herald and Press M A MacDonald Pilot Mound Sentinel Courier led a record turnout of forty four member papers.
Bonnie Duree Needham aged three years drowned Sunday morning when a tractor overturned into a water filled ditch one mile west of Winnipegosis. Parents Mr and Mrs John Needham of The Pas were visiting at the time. She died at 11 am at the scene. An inquest is to be held by Dr William Bashucky, coroner.
Hon. M. N. Hryhorczuk Manitoba attorney general will be the guest speaker at a Dauphin Liberal Club banquet tonight at Jerry's Nite Spot. The event invites members and supporters to hear remarks and celebrate party activities in the region.
May 16 to 28 marks Dauphin’s annual spring clean-up sponsored by the Manitoba Department of Health and Public Welfare and town council. The effort targets health and safety hazards, curb repainting, drainage work, sidewalks, and curb and gutter updates to improve community upkeep and encourage healthier living.
The Dauphin Health unit reports 1 010 polio vaccine injections last week across Ochre River Henderson school Whitmore school Ethelbert Dauphin rural and Gilbert Plains locations. Follow up second shots and boosters planned for June 14 with six and seven year olds who missed doses.
The Canadian Legion BES.L. Decoration Day parade and public service will be held this Sunday May 29. All returned service members are asked to assemble at the Legion hall at 2 15 p m for the parade then move to the Cenotaph for a 2 30 p m service. Afterward veterans will decorate graves at the cemetery and the public is invited to attend both services.
