Town Strikes 20 Mill Rate For General Purposes

Town council approves a 20 mill general levy for 1933 at 209 mills after lengthy debate. Budget shows expenditures exceed revenue by about $40,701.24, with hospital grants, relief services, parks, and street needs prompting spending decisions. Public works, police, health and relief funding cited, and a 1,500 yard gravel purchase for streets approved amid tense budget talks.

Dauphin Opens Season With 5-2 Win Over Ochre River

In Dauphin last Wednesday, the local team opened the season by defeating Ochre River 5 to 2 as both sides allowed only one more run after a hectic first inning. Batteries: Dauphin Slobodzian McAuley Ochre River A Howitt J Howitt. The Mountview League adds Dauphin Ochre River Ste. Rose McCreary and Gilbert Plains. A cup donated by Geo Alexander of McCreary was won by Dauphin last year.

Kinistino By election victory for Liberal candidate

Jobs R. Taylor of Birch Hills won the Kinistino by election in Saskatchewan on Monday by a majority near 2,900 votes. The by election was the second since the government took office in September 1929 and followed Hon. Charles McIntosh accepting the natural resources portfolio two weeks earlier.

Fed Calf Show and Sale Arrangements Under Way

Arrangements are under way for the annual Fed Calf Show and Sale to be held in the skating rink at Dauphin on Friday and Saturday June 3 and 10. Over three hundred calves already entered with five hundred fed during winter. 325 selected after inspection by Theo Bodnar and T P Devlin. Judging by C E Bain and Mr McLean with Swift Canadian Co Winnipeg assistance. Ongoing alterations to rink to accommodate show and sale with sale starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Solomon Cup Won by Grade XII Students

Debating at Dauphin Collegiate ended this term with Grade XII defeating Grade XI for the Solomon Cup. The final resolution supported unifying Canadian Railways as the best solution. Judges noted fact-backed arguments. cup presentation set for early June closing exercises.

Marriage of McArthur and Comrie in Dauphin

Verna Mae Comrie married Donald McArthur on May 2 at United Church Manse Dauphin with Rev D H Telfer officiating. The couple hosted forty guests at a reception and planned a two week honeymoon in Winnipeg.

Regional Fair Planned by Dauphin Agric Society

The Dauphin Agricultural Society moved ahead with plans for a purely district summer fair July 13 to 15 awaiting federal approval. The Winter Fair and Short Course Committee outlined changes including added boys and girls colt and dairy heifer classes with $25 prizes, open to open classes upon payment of entry fees. A new member requirement and lower ad rates were approved, and the Fed Calf Show on June 10 in the skating rink is expected to showcase about 325 calves with buyers from outside expected.

McKee Named Kinsmen Governor At Brandon Meet

Dr A D McKee of Dauphin was elected district governor at the Kinsmen clubs district No 2 convention held at the Prince Edward Hotel Brandon with about 80 members from Brandon Dauphin and Winnipeg The meeting endorsed a national observance night and the Dauphin club reported sponsoring free dental clinics A district picnic was planned for August with Hobe McPherson outlining Dauphin Kinsmen work.

Trail Rangers Stage Second Annual Production The Amazing Monster

Dauphin Trail Ranger Groups led by Earl Chase presented the second annual dramatic production The Amazing Monster at St James church. A matinee followed the Monday evening show. Stan Bradon played the robot, Frank Barker the orang utan, with Stewart Ferguson praised for Jarvis. Cast included Bill Miller Alta Arnold Ruth Bowman Verne Watson and others. Ray Dicks did the sets, Bill Cowcett was stage manager with Bruce Haigh assisting. An orchestra under L Caners supplied intermission music.

Appeal Dismissed in Ewasiuk Excis Act Case Winnipeg

The Court of Appeal in Winnipeg dismissed Yurko Ewasiuk of Sifton’s appeal from a conviction under the excise act for possessing a still. The unanimous court believed the conviction unjust but stood by magistrate Thos Little’s findings and declined to disturb the decision. They urged the case not be prosecuted further and the penalty not enforced.
