Borketon Graduate Wins Medals At Manitoba Convocation

The 82nd annual convocation of the University of Manitoba will award close to 1,400 degrees in two ceremonies at the student union building. Among 30 medal recipients is Donald Stammen, Liutenant-Governor’s Gold medal in agriculture, who also led the Faculty of Agriculture Students' Science Fair and was named a 4H extension service specialist. Additional Dauphin district graduates include Donald Isadore Stammen, Edward George Parhin, Marilyn Thelma Scott, Muriel Olivine Johnson, Janet Claire Schnoor, and William Beddome Brirett.

Hospital Governors to hold annual meeting Friday

The Dauphin General hospital will hold its annual meeting in the board room of the diagnostic unit this Friday May 26 at 8 p.m. Three of the nine board terms expire this year and may be renewed or filled. This year’s completing terms belong to Dr. C Robertson Mrs H A Breslaw and Miss Rhoda Tucker. The meeting is open to the public.

Ed Smee of the Manitoba Tourist Association spoke at the regional development conference in Dauphin. He warned local businessmen that more than 1.5 million dollars could be diverted without attracting and retaining tourist visitors. He based his figures on 8.70 dollars spent per tourist per day, highlighting Dauphin’s edge of the Riding and Duck mountains, fishing, hunting, and a nearby airport to attract flying tourists.

Heat Brings Record Temperatures Across the Week

The region saw a burst of warm weather with two daily records broken. On May 20 the high reached 86 degrees, surpassing 85 from 1955, followed by 88 on May 21, beating 84 from 1943. Forecasts expect another 80 degree day with light rain in spots.

Dauphin Collegiate Institute Awards At Graduation

At the Dauphin Collegiate Technical Institute graduation on May 19 Inspector J N Belton urged graduates to give of themselves for humanity. Laverne Lewycky, Keith Warman and Cecil McPhee won Rotary scholarships. Joyce Neill earned the Legion prize, Vivian Podworny the IODE scholarship, and Laverne Lewycky the Mrs E N McGirr memorial award. Mary Aitken received the student council scholarship. the event honored 108 grade 11 and 97 grade 12 students.

May 12 marked graduation for Ethelbert Collegiate Institute grade 11 and 12. A banquet for graduates and parents followed in a decorous auditorium. Alice Gorchynski Receives Governor General Medal at Graduation

Alice Gorchynski, a Dauphin student born in Cannan com, earned the Governor General’s medal at the 1961 graduation, plus a $50 cash award from the teaching staff. An honor student since collegiate entry, she leads Ukrainian dance, sings in the Ukrainian choir, and has played leading roles in school operettas and basketball.

Manitoba Hydro Seeks Growth for Western Development Region

Manitoba Hydro leader W. D Fallis outlined plans to use regional development conferences to boost prosperity across rural Manitoba. He highlighted diverse regional opportunities including farming, fishing, forestry, and tourism, and urged promoting power use to attract industrial loads with high load factors, noting the utility’s $500 investment per kilowatt of peak load.

Decoration Day Observed by Dauphin Legion Branch

Canadian Legion Dauphin branch No 20 invites local citizens to join Decoration Day events. A cenotaph service at Riverside cemetery follows a 2 pm Legion hall parade assembly, with ceremonies at the cenotaph at 2 30 pm and graveside decorations by veterans and residents. Dauphin boys and girls band will attend.

About a thousand attendees marked the 2nd anniversary of the Resurrection church in Dauphin. Archbishop Maxime Hermaniuk urged robust Christian education to resist materialism and communism, calling for family and church led spiritual life as an example.

Charter Night Celebrated For New Kinsmen Club

May 13 marked Charter Night opening a Kinsmen club in Dauphin. Officers include D. H. McDonald president and A. D. Downs vice president with G W Scalf secretary and B. Scott treasurer. Directors listed along with other officers and members. The Gilbert Plains sponsorship and Frank Hewlke chaired the event with hymns and toasts to the Queen and ladies.

Trophies Awarded Local Militia Men Brigadier Pangman Inspects Dauphin Unit

Brigadier J E C Pangman, Manitoba area commander, Winnipeg, inspected the 70th Field Artillery Battery in Dauphin on May 6. Bdr Robert Torrie won the Coppell trophy for militiaman of the year. Wm Piluke won the Beech marksmanship trophy. Dignitaries included RCMP Superintendent J A Stevenson and Canadian Legion president W E Barrie. A national survival demonstration showed 11 casualties from a bomb damaged building, led by Bdr R Torrie and Gnr L Mus.
