In Washington Secretary Wilson says the US will maintain current force levels for years and equip them with new weapons for greater firepower.
L. W. Blackman district engineer announces an extensive road improvement plan across Highways No. 5 20 50 and 3 plus secondary roads including Ste Rose Rekjavik and Ebb and Flow. Project scope covers gravelling grading double prime surfaces bridge work and relocation from Roblin to Winnipegosis and other sections with onset within weeks.
Timberlands warm with dry winds and rising demand for pulp in the United States. Forester E A Koons warns of fire hazards in high ridges by May. George J Forsyth notes Manitoba Paper Co. Ltd says peeled wood prices rise as a robust market supports a potential recovery from last winter’s losses.
The Department of Citizenship and Immigration announced acceptance of A Freiheit's tender for building four residences and one garage at the McKay Indian residential school. The wood and brick facing homes include the principal and assistant principal houses and a two storey staff quarters, totaling about 100 000 dollars. Freiheit also works on Macleod store project on Third avenue NE, due to be finished by August at a cost of 36 000 dollars.
The report lists a cool 32.2 degree minimum on Thursday May 17 and a high of 80.9 degrees on Monday May 21. Precipitation occurred on two days with a total .12 inches.
Fire Chief Gord Harrison warns of dry grass fires driven by winds near the river flats and hospital. He urges residents to avoid unauthorized grass and bonfires, and to obtain brigade permission before lighting any fires or burning trash to prevent property damage.
138 Dauphin Collegiate-Technical Institute graduates will receive diplomas at Friday eight p.m. exercises in the DMC industrial building. A record total includes 64 Grade XI and 44 Grade XII graduates, with other class totals announced. Guest speaker Andrew Currie of Winnipeg schools will address the ceremony.
The May 31 issue will print double the usual number of copies as the Dauphin Herald promotes a month long city wide sale starting in June. Extra copies will be mailed to families not currently receiving the paper.
April library activity declined with a total circulation of 2823, down 341 from March. Non fiction 372 fiction 887 junior 1672, plus 22 new members and seven cancellations, junior section unchanged. Forty seven new books added across fiction and non fiction. Miss Marjorie Morey outlined government policy on library funding at a Library board meeting.
Red Cross campaign figures approach 31,700 with slow response in recent weeks. Campaign secretary treasurer S. J. Heggie notes returns better than last year but well short of the 3,500 target for 1956. Chairman Robt. N. Dodds remains hopeful more contributions will arrive to push the total toward the goal.
Margaret Spurway took first place for grade 8 girls and Barrie Haverlock won the boys class in the Macneill award public speaking contest held Friday in Smith Jackson auditorium. Sharon Harrysh and Laurie Main were runners up. Spurway spoke on Conservation of Democracy and previously won a Mount View 4-H public speaking title on the same topic. Haverlock used strong anecdotes in The Late Howie Morenz. Cups were presented by W. J. Quick, with 19 contestants praised for high performance.
A Dauphin Ochre area board inquiry on school grant eligibility was answered in a letter from R W Lalen of the Department of Education. It outlines minimum enrollments needed for basic grants in elementary and secondary divisions at Makinak, noting nine high school students next term and potential grants if enrollment reaches thresholds.
At the area board meeting on Tuesday the 1956 57 staff changes were announced. Four resignations take effect June 30 including Walter J. Dowd and others. Six new teachers join Dauphin elementary and composite high school assignments including Olga Boyko Grace Fox Lorna Charles Michael H Dudar and others. Transfers move Michael H Dudar from Bay Centre to the composite high school and John Hrushowy from West Bay to Sifton while Michael Kotyluk shifts from Ochre River to the composite high school.
At a Tuesday area board session trustees W H Rampton and C E Polloway led unanimous approval by Podolia ratepayers to close Podolia school. They asked the board to arrange transportation for Podolia children to Sifton school and to take necessary steps to implement the plan. A May 30 meeting was scheduled to discuss feasibility of continuing Paulson school.
Wilfred G Booth area school inspector will leave Dauphin-Ochre Aug 15 for East Kildonan to assume city inspector duties. Clarence Voigt of Carman will replace him. Booth, active in Dauphin Little Theatre and local culture, helped found regional history work and served with D M C C and Rotary. He is a curling club leader and church vestry member. The Dominion Patrol Service Ltd of Winnipeg offered a seven man police force for 24500 with chief, assistant, five constables, uniforms, equipment, and a motorcycle. It would not include a police car and council deferred decision to the next regular meeting amid rising costs if R C M Police ends May 31 1957.
The Athletic Council reported a 1956 budget of 1933 with a projected 833 end balance as of Dec 31 1955. A 1100 town grant was approved to cover the budget, while a 578 rink appropriation from last year was unspent. Construction of the fourth rink across the river will begin next fall with 20 a month caretaking pay included.
District school track meet at D M C C grounds saw Dauphin Collegiate grade XII lead with 169 points, followed by grade X at 111 and Liften High at 104. Star performers included Paul Kowalyk and Jim Sawdhyn with 26 points each, new marks by Kowalyk in discus and shot put, Sawdhyn in juvenile javelin, Heschuk with a 7.1 seconds juvenile 60 yards record, and Joyce Hertnick voted Track Queen with a senior girls 80 yards mark of 10.4 seconds. Wrestling match June 16 featuring Alex Turk production with top Minneapolis based grapplers, Dauphin Hockey Club sponsor.
