Morning reports indicate loosened bank loan limits allowing longer term corporate securities and installment loans as collateral. Banks may extend loans with stocks as collateral while other restrictions for loans beyond a year are eased.
General Mark Clark says the 187th airborne regiment moves from Japan to Koje Island to bolster UN guard over Red prisoners. He vows no further unlawful acts by prisoners as defenses are strengthened after the uprising and leadership changes.
Sporadic combats resume on the Korean front with an Allied bayonet assault on a red-held hill northwest of Panmunjom killing 27 Communists and wounding 13. Tanks raid central front lines while ashore and carrier planes hit Red supply routes. In the U.S. and Canada major fires cause substantial damage including Corpus Christi Texas at 1,000,000 and Warner Brothers studios at 1,500,000. No injuries reported.
Dauphin’s first all-local ballet produced four Maytime showings in the town hall. More than 60 young dancers, ages three and a half and up, performed in character and national dances plus a baby ballet. Hansel and Gretel featuring Sally McKee as Hansel and Ruth Robson as Gretel drew the crowd. Gordon Atkinson of Sunderland coached the production with Winnipeg ballet support.
The Dauphin junior chamber of commerce received the 1951-52 best single project trophy for promoting minor baseball and sponsoring the Manitoba little league championship in Dauphin last August. The award was presented by Phil Pugsley at a Winnipeg hotel during the region four convention with leaders from Manitoba and northwestern Ontario in attendance.
After canceling the fat stock show due to department rules, Dauphin society shifts focus to horses and other classes for the July 21 to 23 fair. Cattle and 4-H calves will ship separately to Winnipeg for judging and sale. Don Fraser and Dave Hill seek replacements for banned events and plan new attractions to fill the program.
A re organization meeting in Roblin set a 1952 Man Saskatchewan senior baseball league with seven teams: Gilbert Plains Grandview Roblin Yorkton Kamsack Bowsman and Dauphin. The Redbirds hold the Coca Cola trophy. May 26 opener pairs Gilbert Plains and Dauphin. Neil Hamilton is president Roy Wilcox secretary with two reps per club.
Howard M. Watson completes his last trip as a conductor for Canadian National after 42 years of service. Born May 29 1887 in Portage la Prairie he spent most of his career in Dauphin with brief assignments in Winnipeg and Flin Flon. He will retire officially May 29. survivors include wife Edna Jyvan two sons and four grandchildren. He served as Dauphin town councillor 1933 to 1937 and held railway union posts. Family and colleagues welcomed him at Dauphin Station with presentations from Swan River to Sifton.
Dauphin Ochre large school area to close for summer holidays on June 30 with fall reopenings on September 2 for Dauphin Makinak Sifton and Ochre River. Rural schools may reopen a week earlier and graduation is set for June 6 at the town hall.
The Local Hockey Association presents a 1951 52 financial statement showing total revenues of 19 713.63 with gate receipts 11 411.67 and away game allowances 1 100. Net program advertising and donations were 2 114 and 1 439.08. Expenditures reached 18 984.15 with major costs in player time travel and equipment. The report credits Don Grant as treasurer and notes changes in the executive including Norm White joining and Harvey Buckwold retiring president.
Riding Mountain national park authorities in Manitoba establish vehicle disinfection to curb foot and mouth disease. A four percent sodium carbonate bath will be installed at the main gate with similar baths planned at two other park entrances to wet vehicle wheels.
