With nearly a week of sun the seeding program spreads from higher ground to the broader area. By midweek planting gains outpace last year aided by ample top and subsoil moisture and minimal rain needed for two weeks.
The Dauphin forecast district experienced generally warm, dry conditions with little precipitation last week. Night temperatures remained prone to dipping below freezing, while light rain fell on Wednesday Thursday and Saturday.
Brandon SPEBSQSA chorus and quartet offerings entertained a packed town hall audience Saturday evening under Gerry Streuber. The 25 member Brandon chorus, Vagabonds quartet, Flat Happy Four, and Silhouettes performed with intermission entertainment by Primmett Hendry and Smalley. Randolph Murrey MC’d a humorous sketch session. Rotarians hosted a post concert reception.
At a Monday meeting the area school board said 107 of 108 required teachers are in place with only one vacancy at Granville school to be filled this term. New hires include five in the composite high school and several for Dauphin elementary schools, plus transfers and resignations across several rural schools.
The 53rd graduation exercises at Dauphin General Hospital honored nine members of the 1954 class at Dauphin First United Church. Diplomas and medals were awarded to Delores Staub Roberta Shoidice Norma Scott Vera Little Stella Kucheraway Florence Brown Jean Forbes Cecile Lebel Gaylene Nicol. Judge Donald A. Ross addressed the graduates praising their arduous training and standards.
Two Dauphin school patrol members Allan Fair and David Rudy will receive a free trip to Winnipeg next week from the Lions Club during Safety Week. Allan from Henderson school and David from Whitmore school will tour Winnipeg sites and observe local patrols, chosen for academic and patrol performance factors.
Bismarck High School's symphony orchestra, with an average age of 16, presented a two hour concert featuring William Billings' Ches tub and Walt ers' trombone trio Slippery Gentlemen. Accompanist Miss Karen Upgrew aided novelty numbers. Instrument instruction starts in fifth grade and continues through twelfth. The tour marks the first for the ensemble, with school credits to be awarded.
Warmer weather and the fishing season boost town tourism as the town tourist camp opens for the season and power is restored. Six cabins are being remodeled to add showers toilets and wash basins, replacing old basins from prior setups.
Dauphin chamber of commerce meeting endorses Roblin request to Canada National Railways to restore sleeping car service and bus routes. A committee is tasked with addressing rail and bus service curtailment and a petition process for Saturday shop closing rules is considered after a progress report on other towns.
The second annual Northern Manitoba livestock show and sale in Dauphin drew about 1,200 buyers and spectators. Auctioneer Jock Blacklock sold 75 head in hours, with top price 65 cents a pound for a white Shorthorn steer owned by Florence Powell. Bulls averaged 392 dollars, while Herefords peaked at 550 for Stan Primrose Regent. The event, judged by Vern Falloon, highlighted continued growth of Manitoba cattle breeding and confirmed Dauphin as a key regional market.
Health unit officials will inspect lanes and complaint areas during the annual clean-up campaign. The 1942 by-law requires raised containers and specifies sizes for metal cans and wooden or metal boxes, with fixed mounting, lids and sliding doors, and mandates cleaning and orderly disposal in business districts.
Five coyote puppies about two weeks old were dug out of a den on Harley Armstrong’s Burrows district farm last weekend. Jim and Bert Tucker found four males and one female about five feet from the surface. The pups were turned over to the rural municipal office for bounty collection of five dollars each.
Edmonton native John M. Hansen will join the town as engineer, taking up duties June 1. A 1933 civil and structural engineering graduate from the Technical University of Denmark, he has worked in Copenhagen, with the United Oil Co, general contractors, and Alberta province. He succeeds E F Lundman, who leaves for Winnipeg. Hansen is 44, married, and previously with the Edmonton city engineering department and Defence Construction Ltd.
The Canadian Legion will hold its Decoration Day parade on Sunday May 30 returning veterans are asked to assemble at the Legion hall at 2 15 p m for the event in the afternoon.
Mrs. B C Goodhand of Dauphin is among four recipients of life memberships at the Manitoba Provincial Council of Women semi annual meeting in Dauphin. Delegates from Winnipeg and many towns discussed alcohol effects, aged care, school systems, and women’s roles, with panels urging stronger alcohol education and studies of the Highway Traffic Act. Frances McKay presented the honors. the gathering included tours and talks on modern womanhood and provincial issues.
