Museum and Art Exhibition Draws Dauphin Visitors

Close to 1500 school children and citizens viewed paintings and articles at the Dauphin town hall Monday and Tuesday. Exhibits from the Manitoba Museum Winnipeg Art Gallery and University of Manitoba highlighted Manitoba scenes Eskimo and Indian crafts fossils and mineral ores. Miss Alice E. Johannsen led lectures and illustrated talks on Canadian painting. The event, sponsored by the School Board, drew organized groups from Dauphin and rural areas.

Honorary Degree Conferred On H. N. Macneill at Manitoba Convocation

Laws, honoris causa, were awarded to H. N. Macneill at a Winnipeg convocation in the Civic Auditorium. The ceremony opened a diamond jubilee celebration of the University of Manitoba with Dean D. S. Woods presenting the candidate and Chancellor J. W. Dafoe conferring the degree. Dr. Macneill, known for educational and hospital service, is the first Dauphin citizen to receive the honor.

Mrs M Sumpton 50 Dies After Lengthy Illness in Dauphin

Mrs Morris Sumpton nee Catherine Rose O Donnell died Sunday night May 16 after nearly a year illness. A Dauphin resident for 30 years she was born in Inman Nebraska and married Morris Sumpton in 1909. She leaves husband three sons Dan George M J, and two daughters Mary and Alice. four sisters and two brothers. Funeral May 19 at St Viator s Church with burial at Riverside Cemetery.

Honors and Graduations at University of Manitoba

Following examinations, Manitoba University honors and graduations list includes Edna Medd as Isbister Junior first year scholar, Bonar J. Gorby as Cunningham Memorial Chemistry first year recipient, and graduates Leslie Steckley, John Armstrong, Marcel Aubin, Myrtle Albright. Law results show Edward Hawkins third year pass and Allan Solomon second year pass.

Football Outlook Bright As Teams Organize for Year

The Dauphin Football Association held its first meeting on May 11 at McKenzie School to elect officers and plan the league schedule. Three teams signaled entry for a season opening May 21 with seven p.m. games at the ball park, including Collegiate, Dauphin United, and Bryce Bakeries.

Softball teams prepare for coming summer schedule

As a meeting is yet to be held, several softball teams are forming strong outfits for the regular summer schedule. Further details and the schedule will be published once arrangements are finalized.

Country Club Offers Holiday Play on May 24

Country Club plans a holiday program for May 24 with special arrangements for play. A mixed foursome draw will be posted at the club house on Saturday. Visitors and green fee players are welcome and the holiday schedule will not affect them.

Rural Field Day Set for June 11 at Exhibition Grounds

Rural schools in the Rural Municipality of Dauphin will hold Field Day on Friday June 1 at 10 30 a m at the Exhibition Grounds not at Smith Jackson school as before An invitation is extended to the public to attend The date was moved from June 4 to accommodate the U F M convention.

Tennis Club Opens Saturday With Tea Service

Weather permitting the Dauphin Tennis Club will officially open on Saturday afternoon May 22. Tea will be served to members and visitors. The Commercial Girls Tennis Club members are cordially invited to attend.

Coronation Day Observed In Dauphin Parade and Service

Dauphin celebrated Coronation Day with a municipal parade through town streets and a commemorative service in front of the town hall. The parade featured floats from local groups, over 100 decorated bikes, and a military escort led by Lieut. W. J. Easterbrook, with music by the Salvation Army band and ceremonies led by RCMP officers. Hon. Robert Hawkins MLA delivered the address, followed by hymns, prayers, and the National Anthem.
