The Royal Bank of Canada opens a full service branch in Ethelbert on Friday May 12 with Rows A Ridder in charge to serve the town and surrounding district.
An initial Dauphin gathering Thursday May 12 launches a blueprint for developing the Western Manitoba region. Hon Gurney Evans says the session will map 30 urban and rural municipalities from Swan River to Lake Manitoba, guiding a Montreal Economic Research Corporation study.
Canadian National Railways announces coach class fare reductions between Flim Flen and Winnipeg and intermediate points. The new low rates run May 15 to September 20 with savings up to 27 percent on one way and round trip tickets between Finn Filton Cranberry Portage The Pas Swan River Dauphin and Winnipeg.
Free tuberculin skin testing and chest x rays will be available to all residents of Dauphin town and surrounding rural areas from June 9 to 20. The Dauphin council of women and town council organized the survey, with results from last year showing 1500 reactors and four active TB cases in town and three in rural areas.
The Dauphin Film council received a RCA Victor 16 mm projector to be housed at the Dauphin Public library. Training courses for projectionists will be run at the library on Tuesday evenings at 7 30 for three weeks starting May 23.
Walter Smelski 18 of Dauphin won first prize with a 357 score in the Dauphin Jaycees Teen-Age Safe Driving Road-e-o held Sunday May 7 at the Dauphin airport. Alex Paul 18 took second with 351 points and Boris Stasiuk 17 was third with 338. Smelski received the R. R. Stark trophy, a gold watch, Imperial Oil prize Parker set, and $25 cash. Sandra Marsh 18 earned $5 for best girl performance with 295. Forty-one entrants earned certificates. Smelski and Paul advance to Winnipeg for provincial finals with other regional winners to compete for three national prizes.
Reports from the finance and building committees of the Senior Citizens' Housing Project cover a meeting held Tuesday evening May 9 in the senior citizens' clubroom. E. Johansen chaired the session as representatives of the finance committee presented progress.
The ninth Dauphin Agricultural Society livestock show and sale drew 127 4H members from ten clubs with over 2 000 spectators. Raymond McQuarrie won the John Conner Memorial Trophy for the grand champion 46 calf with a 775 pound Shorthorn sold to Canada Safeway for 55 cents per pound. Carol Skramstad claimed reserve, a 70 pound Hereford, sold for 25 cents per pound. Figures show strong prices across breeds and a $100 prize to Carol from the Canadian Hereford Association.
At the May 9 meeting Ochre River council awarded grades on market roads to George Turnbull and George Schapf after bids from four other contractors. The council plans a dog license by law with impounding for dogs at large and aims to pass it next meeting if a dog catcher is found. The June 16 meeting replaces the usual second Tuesday. All council members will attend the Roblin district meeting on June 20 and the Union of Manitoba Municipalities. Estimates for 1961 and Laurier school district levies were set at 57 mills on lands in that district, up from 34 in 1960. An economic survey meeting is planned for May 18 in Dauphin’s Legion hall with all council members invited.
The weatherman notes cool air and jackets needed with 46 inches of rain this week. On Sunday May 14 the area enjoyed a perfect summer day ideal for mothers and fishermen, with little temperature change expected soon.
The Dauphin-Ochre Area school board awarded Freiheit Construction Ltd. the $126,425 tender to build eight classrooms and a four class auditorium at the Whitmore school. Seven bids ranged to $157,700. Architect Roy M. Lee of Winnipeg attended. Classrooms should be ready for the September opening.
On May 21 the Ukrainian Catholic parish of the Resurrection in Dauphin hosts a Pontifical High Mass marking the church’s 25th anniversary. Most Rev Maxime Hermaniuk leads services with a CKDM broadcast from 11 to 12 15, followed by a parish hall dinner and a 1 30 concert in the Metropolitan's honor plus a 6 pm teachers’ gathering.
The Dauphin CN station has undergone a major renovation since February to house Hudson Bay Area offices. Interior updates include insulated walls, fluorescent lighting, lowered ceilings, and redecoration. The layout shifts free space from waiting rooms to engineering and drafting, office suites, and central filing.
The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal in the community aims to raise 3000 dollars as canvassers visit every home Thursday evening May 18 led by chairman George Delaney with Captain Stepto directing efforts. Donations total 147.50 so far with 69745.30 raised in the province thus far.
