The Dauphin community hears a call for cooperation to fund artificial ice facilities. The chairman notes past local efforts and youth sports needs, praising volunteers and the value of free contributions, while urging appreciation for benefits gained at no direct cost.
The Dauphin Saddle Club sponsored event at DMCC arena features a six pony hitch demonstration by iron gray ponies averaging 41 inches. Entries from Saskatche bow Winnipeg McCreary Rus sel Dauphin lead to a program with events like tall roping steer riding barrel racing and western reining. Modern Dairies postcard funded ponies from Madison Square Gardens and Maple Leaf Gardens.
1962 President Dauphin Lions Ernie Erickson was named new president and will guide an executive team including Ozzie Hirschsfield Steve Heechuk Joe Neil Ross Reid Art Rampton Ray Johnston Gerry Wilson Len Tarner Art McLaren and directors John Lysak Wilf Schneider. The group pledged full support to DMCC efforts to raise funds for artificial ice at the arena.
Dauphin groups including the Dauphin Travellers and fair board plan a parade for the fair on Friday July 13. Merchants will stay open to benefit both fair and business. A July 13 parade float call to action ends a lengthy multi group discussion.
Over the past week there were two rain days totaling .90 inches lifting field moisture. Cloudbursts west of Dauphin and east over the weekend brought heavy rain to Portage, Winnipeg and Brandon up to 1.95 inches. Wheat and wild oats show growth and warmer weather will aid seeding.
Federal election campaign heats up as party leaders debate the nuclear weapons stance. Prime Minister Diefenbaker and rivals face sharper questions from the New Democratic party on the left and others on the right amid rising tensions and intensifying public interest.
Lester Pearson said a Liberal government would not acquire nuclear weapons under present world circumstances. At Brockville Ontario the Prime Minister noted that as long as disarmament continues Canada will not add weapons. Diefenbaker’s stance signals the campaign’s intensity amid public opinion, with devaluation of the dollar a second major issue.
Dauphin voters head to the town hall auditorium Friday May 18 for a two candidate race to fill the 1962 63 council term. Ballot order lists Tred Chaykowki and Jerald S Porter with advance polls tonight 5 to 9 30 p m on ground floor and polls 9 a m to 6 p m. A total of 4627 electors on the voters list includes 4365 residents and 262 non residents.
Vernon H. Rampton, returning officer, posts lists of electors for the federal election. Rural preliminary lists may be inspected at the officer’s 29 First Avenue SW headquarters. Rural enumerators revise lists between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on May 31. Urban revising agents will visit districts from May 25 to June 2 to add any qualifying electors missing from the urban list. Mailing of urban preliminary lists to Dauphin households starts this weekend.
An increase of more than 500 names on the preliminary voters list for Dauphin urban polls was reported by Vernon H Ramp ton returning officer. For the 1958 election 3 943 were listed. preliminary lists for June 18 total 4 458 names, an increase of 515 urban names.
Raymond McQuarrie of the Grandview 4H Beef Calf club showed the grand champion calf at the tenth DMCC livestock show in Dauphin. The 830 pound Shorthorn steer sold to Canada Safeway for 50 cents per pound. Reserve grand champion was a 950 pound Hereford steer shown by Carol Skramstad, selling to Safeway for 30 cents per pound, with Carol receiving a $100 cheque from the Canadian Hereford Association.
Dauphin and the local health unit designate May 14 to May 19 as Spring Clean Up Week. Residents are urged to tidy premises by collecting loose papers and leaves and disposing of winter refuse. Do not leave fires unattended and avoid burning on paved streets to prevent pavement damage.
May 1 nomination day produced a full slate by acclamation in Winnipegosis. Mayor George Rodrigue was re elected for two years along with re elected councillors Jack Kruchek ward one and F. E. Smith ward three. School board trustees re elected were J. L. Jira ward one J. H. Turner ward three and Raymond Fleming ward four. New trustees are Mrs. Margaret Rodrigue ward two and Mrs. Elizabeth Pawlick ward three for a one year term. Other trustee terms run two years. Elections are held annually in May per village charter.
Dauphin Fixtures Ltd expands at 28 Second Avenue NE to display Stephens paints and extend the cabinet sash and door operation. The firm adds two Dauphin women clerks to a nine person staff, reaching eleven. Ted Treendle of Manufacturers Life Insurance moves his office to 20 River Avenue East. he joined the company in 1927 after earlier work in Regina. Dauphin Plains Credit Union Society Ltd unveils a new front for its Main Street building.
The Bank of Nova Scotia announces Ian M. MacGregor as manager of its Dauphin branch, succeeding P. J. T. LeGallais who moved to Sherbrooke. MacGregor arrived last Friday from Regina, where he previously served.
The McGirr and Hirschfield law office relocates to the Hawkins building on Second Avenue NW effective the first of this month, closing a 45 year span in Dauphin history. The firm began as Simpson & McGirr in 1917 in the Clark Block on Main Street, later occupying space facing Second Avenue NE after Bank of Montreal expansion. The move aligns with Bank plans for further expansion this year.
