Dauphin Board of Trade Plans Interprovincial Highway Picnic

The tourist and publicity committee invites boards of trade from north western Manitoba and Workton to a May 24 meeting in Robiin to form an interprovincial party celebrating Manitoba Highway 5 joining Saskatchewan Highway 16. Yorkton and Dauphin sponsor a Labor Day picnic expected to attract up to 25 thousand people along No 6 corridor.

Fire destroys dairy barn on McCrae farm near Dauphin

A blaze at W. D. McCrae’s farm nine miles southwest of Dauphin during Saturday night consumed the barn and five harness horses along with stock feed. A cow and two horses were saved after the owner woke to the glare. The cause remains undetermined and insurance partially covers the loss.

Russian Orthodox Church to Found Seminary in Sifton Manitoba

Hl Grace Bishop Arseny announced a new Russian Orthodox seminary to be built at the monastery in Sifton Manitoba as a pilgrimage center akin to Kiev Pecherska Lavra. A May 29 missionary feast will mark the start. Deacon John Kowalchuk will be ordained May 22 and sent to Saskatchewan.

Much Needed Rain Falls Over Weekend

Dauphin district records 60 hours of near continuous rain the longest since 1929. After a dry spell and dry spring, the moisture boosts crops with wheat sown, oats 60 percent and barley 25 percent. Water shortages diminish and rivers creeks and lakes recover. roads remain difficult outside provincial highways.

Canadian National to Build Recreation Area at Dauphin

CN Railway approves plans for a recreation area beside the roundhouse at Dauphin. An appropriation of 1.2 percent funds construction directed by the local CN Recreation Association. Plans include football field two softball diamonds athletic sites and a quarter mile track. Work to clear the area will begin immediately.

Fraser Lunn Dies on 25th Birthday in Windsor

Fraser Lunn son of Mr. and Mrs. Robi Lunn of Dauphin died at Metropolitan General Hospital Windsor Ont on his 25th birthday from spinal meningitis. He was educated in Dauphin schools and college and had a wide circle of friends. As a youth he survived the loss of most of one foot in a train accident at the Dauphin station.

Budget aims to lighten levy and council eyes water plan

Councillor A A Brewer heads a finance review ahead of a council budget with hopes for a 3 to 4 mill levy cut. Councillor W D King seeks approval to divert a creek to improve muddy town water at the intake, estimated at 1500 dollars and planned for summer if approved.

Dauphin students from the town graduated in Winnipeg on Wednesday, the largest group yet to finish at the University of Manitoba. Names include Miss Doo thy Bewell, Miss Jean Iredale, Clarence Roste, E Solomon, Frank T. Malcolm, Douglas Houston, and others with families in attendance.

Meeting of District No 2 Royal Arch Masons in Dauphin

District No 2 Royal Arch Masons met in Dauphin on May 13 under Rt Ex Comp G H Crimes. Delegates from Portage la Prairie Neepawa Rivers and Dauphin attended with Winnipeg grand lodge officers. An evening Masonry discussion followed at the Masonic temple. Dauphin Country Club golf course plans to expand to 18 holes with J Scott directing the survey and George Daniels from Niakwa advising next week.

Bowling Club to Open Season May 24

The Dauphin Bowling Club held a Friday meeting to elect committees and plan the season start on May 24. George A. Jackson presided, Thos. Little reported, and a mixed opening draw with prizes was set. Committees were named for grounds finance Kraw membership official umpire and ladies and men’s greens prepared for play.

Railroaders Top Collegiate 2-0 In League Start

The Railroaders climbed to first in the league by beating the Collegiate 2-0. Belton and MacArthur scored, while Collegiate's forward line failed to convert chances. Rangers vs N R C N R game postponed due to wet grounds, and a jitney dance is planned for May 28 at Roseland with Mrs. Peebles’ orchestra.

Fire destroys Welland home with contents in Winnipeg village

Fire swept the house of Mr. and Mrs. H. FE. Welland at three o clock Tuesday morning the 6th inst gutting the structure and all contents. The blaze started in a bathroom and the occupants struggled to escape. The property, owned by W. J. Rankine of Winnipeg, was insured along with the contents. Many valuable keepsakes were lost and cannot be replaced. The family is staying with friends in the village pending arrangements.

Frances Marilla Amos and Ernest William Malcolm Lee were married Thursday at Home Street United Church in Winnipeg. The bride, attended by her sister Evelyn Grace, wore a midnight blue crepe ensemble with ophelia roses. the groom’s best man was Leonard Winterburn. A reception followed at the bride’s parents’ home. they will live in St Vital, Manitoba.

First School Musical Festival Planned at Dauphin

The Dauphin festival on May 23 draws over sixty entries showing strong local and rural school interest. Adjudicator Miss Ethel Kinley of Winnipeg brings experience from major festivals. entrants must arrive at 9:15 and 1:15 for orderly competition. L. B. A. Bazaar set for October 17.
