A council meeting reviewed a petition signed by 19 residents and a private letter urging action on dog nuisance and property damage. The dogcatcher was ordered to tighten enforcement of by law banning dogs at large, with 25 years of lax enforcement noted. A north end resident blamed many large dogs for ongoing complaints.
Pat Lynch was elected president of the Dauphin Jaycees at the May 3 meeting. He will direct the group for the coming year. Officers include Arni Eggertson, Morley Cillis, Doug Powells, Jack Metcalfe. Inauguration set for May 19 at Jerry's birthday party. Retiring president R. A. Houston praised for service. Committees announced with Ev Stitt social, Bill Clark publicity, Joe Neill membership, Ed Wilcox civic affairs, Steve Stastook welfare.
The second annual Dauphin bull sale and 4 Heatstock show will be held at the Dauphin livestock arena this Friday May 14 with Yorkshire sows also up for sale. Sponsored by the Northern Manitoba Livestock Association and the Dauphin Agriculture Society judging begins 9:30 am and sale at 1:30 pm. Twenty five Shorthorns Herefords and Aberdeen Angus cattle will be auctioned by J R Blacklock of Saskatoon.
The Dauphin Lions club with the Dauphin town council and the RCMP set May 24 to 29 for Safety Week. The program stresses traffic safety for children with Most Careful Driver awards, school safety patrols, police led rule lessons, and bicycle safety testing and competitions with prizes for correct questionnaire answers and safe riding demonstration.
The Dauphin forecast district saw frost on all but one night with daytime temps around 50 degrees. The weatherman predicts further warm weather with Wednesday noon reaching 65 degrees.
Dauphin Garage association urged to add after school hours and summer coverage as traffic rises. Town council backed the plan noting existing after hours garage insufficient, with a rotation during fair week cited. Also approved was a subdivision filam for the south-west corner of section 14-25-19 facing Route River Avenue, with request to the highways department to waive objections to keep land subdivision on track.
The 1954 Red Shield Appeal launches in Dauphin under Salvation Army auspices to raise 3050 dollars. Chaired by Jack Henderson with Mayor W L Bullmore as vice chair and Captain F Pierce guiding campaigns. The drive invites every resident to donate 50 cents yearly to support clothing, groceries, meals, beds, literature, and hospital aid for the needy.
The Dauphin town council approved O. Carriere as the new athletic director to start by Sept. 1 under a joint Dauphin school board and town hire agreement. Carriere, a noted Canadian runner and multi sport coach, will oversee after school and evening sports while a separate hockey group handles minor hockey. A management committee will supervise the program with principals preparing a timetable before September 1.
The town schedules a cleanup from May 8 to May 22 with weekly pickups in the business district. Eligible items include ordinary household refuse cans clothing ashes grass clippings garden waste and certain commercial and garage waste excluding packing cartons and paper.
The Manitoba Provincial Council of Women holds its semi annual meeting at Dauphin First United church with delegates from four local councils and nine federated associations. Activities include tours, a tea, life memberships, discussions on citizenship and freedoms, a playlet, and reports on teacher recruitment highway safety and aged care.
The Brandon chapter of the Barber Shop singers society performs again in the town hall this Saturday May 15. The show is sponsored by the Dauphin Rotary club and drew large crowds last year.
Engineer E Lundman told the Dauphin Lions club that the town needs new civic offices built around 1905 and outlived usefulness. He urged backing a town planning scheme to guide future growth and reduce political influence on changes, noting water storage limits and aging sewer and hydrant systems.
Fit.-Lt. Delmar L. Osborne 31 a Dauphin native and RC AF veteran was killed when his Mustang fighter crashed in a field three miles west and one mile north of Glenella near Dauphin last Thursday evening after a flight from Dauphin to Winnipeg Cause of the crash is unknown and the RCAF opened an investigation Osborne leaves a wife Joyce Louise and two children Rodney Craig 6 and Karen Dawn 3 also two sisters and a brother He had rejoined in 1948 and served at St Hubert Dorval Rivers and with Winnipeg No 402 Auxiliary Fighter Squadron.
The Dauphin regional festival crowned winners Saturday after the final Henderson school concert. Notable honors went to Gwen Hampton for the T Eaton Rose Bowl, Sylvia Moroz for the Bach trophy, Audrey Gash for the Middleton piano trophy, Linda Meyer for the Women’s Musical Club cup, and Raymond McKillop for the BPO Ellis piano trophy, with numerous other trophies awarded to students from Gilbert Plains, Dauphin, Whitmore, and local churches.
Campbell of Kilmohr produced by the Dauphin Little Theatre group won the regional festival’s top award as best play. W. G. Booth received the Goodhand trophy for directing, Dr. C. C. Wright won best male actor, while the Little Theatre cup and shield honors went to Campbell of Kilmohr. The Molgat trophy went to Bagpipes from McCreary. Mrs. E. L. Scott earned best actress for The Six Queens. Adjudicator Mrs. G. R Rowe praised balance and stage presence, with further commendations for cast members and other entries.
