Open House at No 10 Showcases Victory Bond Purchases

Amid bad weather and limited transport, No 10 SFTS hosted a public open house to display wartime equipment funded by Fourth Victory loan bonds. Visitors toured all station buildings, viewed aircraft parts, uniforms, and armaments, and learned how bond purchases financed modern gear.

Freight shed at Dauphin to close weekly hours

J. H. Young stated to The Herald that effective next Monday the Canadian National Railways freight shed at Dauphin will close Monday to Friday inclusive at 5 30 p m and Saturday at 1 p m Freight shipments will not be accepted after these hours

The Combines of 1943 variety entertainment tour stops at Dauphin Town hall next Tuesday and Wednesday. Sponsored by Massey Harris the program features fast action comedy music and a nine girl chorus with Betty Robertson and Pat McIntain leading. Sugar Ration Changes Curbs Fairness of Preserves

Canada switches from post purchase sugar to an application based system. Applicants sought 210 million pounds but the government can distribute only 100 million, so sugar will be allocated pro rata. Those who asked for multiples of their needs may receive more than required while moderate requests get about half.

Fourth Victory Loan Total Reaches 402 100

Local War Finance figures show Dauphin district subscriptions hit 402 100 by Tuesday night from 2504 buyers, exceeding its 365 000 allotment. Unit 38 still needs 296 buyers to meet the remaining quota as four days of the campaign continue. Banks to stay open May 15 for subscribers. The bulletin urges maximum investment to resist Nazi domination.

Annual Ladies Night of Dauphin Lions Club Highlights Past Week

The Dauphin Lions Club held its Annual Ladies Night at the Town hall on May 6 with eighty Lions wives and guests. Attendees included Lion Councillor Charlie Carter and Capt Muriel Delong of the Canadian Army Nursing Corps. The evening featured presentations, inductions of nine new members, and awards from a recent drive. Dining, singing, and dancing followed with No. 7 B and G school orchestra providing music.

Don Jackson Listed Among 37 Canadian Airmen Lost

Pilot Officer Donald Victor Jackson of Dauphin is among 37 Canadian airmen missing after a torpedoed ship carrying officers to Britain sank. He trained at Glaceholm and Portage la Prairie and recently completed No 7 AOS at Portage. His sister Marion lives at home. His 21st birthday is this month.

Beam Flying Program Begins at No 10 SFTS

Practical beam flying to start at No 10 SFTS with the first standard beam approach landing system being installed at No 2 RCAF Training Command. Modern equipment to aid landings in fog and heavy rain will be deployed across all SFTS stations. The system, taught previously on the Link trainer, forms part of standard instrument landing training.

Teachers' Bonus Increases Approved By School Board

The Dauphin School board approved raises in base salaries and bonuses for public school teachers. Men now earn 900 dollars and women 850 dollars, with a 108 dollar bonus for collegiate and public school staff starting Sept 1. Four resignations were accepted and fuel and van issues discussed as wartime conditions strain supplies.

Truly Public Library Needs Public Support in Dauphin

Mrs. J N McFadden told the Dauphin Rotary Club that the local library started in the late 1920s as a private association with an eight member board and a $2 membership. She urged stronger town backing to transform it into a true public library with reference books a reading room and a juvenile section.

Fort Garry Horse Unit Receives Expanded Equipment

The Dauphin armoury adds a 2 inch mortar and a Boys anti-tank gun for the Fort Garry Horse reserve. A Bren carrier. is to arrive soon after half a dozen carriers were tested in town by officers in training from Shilo. Recruits still needed for the Garrys as Gen McFarlane plans an inspection tour next week.
