Rain of 1 percent inch last week aided crops and pasture, boosting growth. Weeds especially wild oats have begun to spread, while land remains in good working condition. Mr Hill says moisture was badly needed for pas tures hayland and lawns after near-nil growth before the rain.
Captain Gage of the Salvation Army reports a one night residential canvass yielding 891 dollars and praises Royal Canadian Legion branch No. 20 for support. The business section canvass is underway and clubs and organizations are urged to contribute at 211 First Street NE, with country donors encouraged to use the same method to hasten completion.
The Flowers of Hope seeds were packaged this year by North end Cubs Scouts and Rover groups and other volunteers. They have been mailed to homeowners with no door to door canvass. The public is invited to mail donations to the Dauphin Association for Retarded Children Box 458 Dauphin.
The directors authorize a new co op plant beside the Co op locker plant on First avenue SW with ten house styles and limited custom work. Production planned to start in early June serving do it yourself builders local contractors and full assembly on site. Basic units include exterior wall cabinets and room dividers. Canada saw 15 percent of single family homes prefabricated in 1964 and the share is expected to double by 1970. The plant aims to give members up to date lumber and building services.
Federal minister extends Moon Lake agreement with town to 15 years ending March 31, 1980. The measure keeps Edwards Lake supply through the park while urging continued searches for alternative, non park sources. Dauphin gains time to meet rising water needs as new arrangements are planned.
Local authorities designate May 17 through 22 as Spring Clean-Up Week to improve sanitation and community appearance. Extra trucks will collect non combustible debris, with residents urged to place trash at rear lots. Activities include trimming branches and removing winter accumulations to support health goals.
Patsy Heschuk won first place in the girls folk song class at the Brandon festival and placed fourth in another class. The Dauphin pupil of Dahlgren studios is expected to feature in future festivals.
Rain on three days in the middle of the past week totaled 1.56 inches. Warm weather returned on Monday with temperatures in the 70s, aiding seeding and spring work. Farmers hope for continued warm, productive days and minimal aftermath from heavy rain seen elsewhere in the province.
On May 4, nomination day for Winnipegosis civic elections, two council seats and four school board posts were filled by acclamation. Elected to council: John Kruchek ward two and Ralph Lamb ward four. School board members are Fred G. Johnson ward one, Mrs. Pearl Lytwyn ward two, Mrs. Elizabeth Pawlicki ward three, and John Wiebe ward four. Returning officer was Mert Dsiak, secretary treasurer of the village.
Dauphin town council heard the first reading of a by-law to issue 75000 in debentures to fund an indoor pool as a centennial project. The plan spreads repayments over ten years 1967–1976, with annual payments of 9950, aiming to keep Centennial levies under the prior mill. The by-law awaits Municipal Board approval and a June ratepayer vote.
A Dauphin hospital nursing school reunion plans proceed with 70+ registrations for the June 29–30 event. Of 284 graduates since 1901, only 17 remain on a missing list. supporters urge contact with Mrs. Phil Leonard for updates.
Miss Eileen Higgin awarded 88 and 90 by the adjudicator for the Dowlerettes choir. Rotary trophy won for high calibre singing and accomplished performances. Group dressed in turquoise blue, praised for tone, legato and stage presence. Gregory Fonseca, 17 years old, wins the Rev M Cooney trophy for boys vocal solo at Brandon festival after success at Dauphin and Winnipeg. He is praised for natural voice and tone with careful pronunciation. He studies at Dahlgren studios and is the son of Mr and Mrs A Fonseca.
The Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre board unanimously endorsed locating an indoor swimming pool on DMCC grounds. The plan, presented by Dauphin Centennial delegates, proposes a four-lane Olympic-length pool next to the tennis courts with year-round operation and self-sustaining finances. A full-time managing director would oversee year-round activities and pool operations, with one-third of salary charged to the pool.
The Dauphin Ethelbert Ste. Rose 4H finals were at Ochre River hall on May 8. Judges included Miss Gilberte Proteau Ste. Rose Ozzie Hirschfield Dauphin and Mrs Mary Prokopowich Liiton. Joan Boiteau Mc Creary won for her speech on Success and received the Mrs R E Forbes trophy. Second place went to Jackie Waldack.
