The Manitoba Court of Appeal ruled Tuesday that a man in Dauphin did not sell twenty mules in the town last summer and was forced by town officials to pay a five dollar head tax. Following the sale the plaintiff filed in county court to recover money, but Judge Bonnycastle of Dauphin decided that a mule is a horse.
Sam Eagie and James Playford report in Dauphin that fields in the Riding Mountains rival southern California and Texas. They describe crude oil in shale, bentonite wax, asphalt sandstones, and strong oil mounds near Dauphin, urging a local syndicate to drill within 500 to 1000 feet to prove oil.
Friday session chaired by R C Smith with present members. Minutes approved and finances accepted. Overseers elected C W McLachlin chair, R C Smith vice, W S Marsh secretary treasurer. Sutherland and Stelck Ltd received a Chevrolet headquarters wire authorizing a $100 price reduction on the 499 Chevrolet model. The discount targets prospective buyers of Chevrolets.
The Lieut Stuart Widmeyer Chapter 1.C.C.E. will supervise the Ram say Wright tea room on the afternoon and evening of May 23.
John Saranchuk of Ethelbert appeared before Police Magistrate J W Robe at Gilbert Plains on Thursday for ill treating his son and was fined $50. The son was turned over to the Children’s Aid Society of Dauphin. He previously had five sons and had driven them from home. About a year ago he appeared before Bert Skaife at Ethelbert on a prior matter.
The objective for Dauphin was set and the efforts of Ensign McCaughey with local staff and assistants, plus public generosity, combined to surpass the goal by 206 dollars. The total collection amounted to 1706 dollars.
One hundred Oddfellows and Rebekah lodge members paraded to Saar terian Church on Sabbath for the order’s anniversary. Rev. Philip Duncan cited the Three Link Chain with love as the strongest link. The sermon urged the church to spread the chain worldwide and serve its broader mission. Two choir pieces were performed well.
