Local Staff Prepares For Census Taking

The 1961 census for Dauphin district and rural Dauphin area subdivided into 19 sub districts will use 19 census takers. Census takers will conduct house to house calls in urban and rural areas, with data sent to Winnipeg for editing and Ottawa for publication.

Display of Mackay Pupils Paintings May 15 Exhibit

A Mackay residential school display on Monday May 15 from 2 PM to 5 PM features 60 paintings by Indian children. Half come from Mackay pupils, half from West Coast Indians collected by artist Robert Aller. A large mural from the Mackay class will be shown alongside other works.

12 Room Collegiate Officially Opened at Winnipegosis

The 12 room Winnipegosis collegiate dedication occurred Friday evening May 5 in the new auditorium. Duck Mountain school division board chairman Sigurdson welcomed guests and introduced speakers including Hon Stewart E. McLean Manitoba minister of education. He praised the board and staff, noted education growth, and thanked architect Ian Brown and contractor Sam Warner. McLean conveyed Manitoba government education support and prize the new building as a milestone in local schooling.

Dauphin Federal Conservative Group Elects Mobberley President

Macneil junior choir wins Brandon trophy in festival

Weather notes temperate spell with cool nights

The weather man reports several warm days and cool nights. On Tuesday May 9 the low reached 20 degrees, the coldest since 1945, while last week brought 0.56 inches of rain, aiding seeding operations to begin.

Dauphin drama festival awards handed to local groups

At the 35th Dauphin district drama festival in Kenderson school, Miss Norrie Duthie awarded trophies for best senior and junior plays. Kelwood high school won best junior play and best out-of-town play for The Devil and Daniel Webster. Doug Fletcher and Iris Gardiner earned top junior acting honors. Dave McDonald and B Crucq won senior acting and directing awards. Dauphin Little Theatre also won best play for Happy Journey to Camden and Trenton.

Dauphin entries included Alice Gorchynski placing second in soprano with 165 points, while Karrie Campbell and Tania Pratchen tied for third in folk song among 19 under 17 entrants.

Total Library Circulation Tops Three Thousand in April

Dauphin Public Library reports April totals reach 1929 fiction and non fiction, 2140 book outs, with 66 senior and 72 junior registrations. Monthly story hour drew 582 attendees. new display by James Parker of Gilbert Plains showcased historical pictures.
