Farmers in well drained lands began seeding while lower areas remain water logged. Seeding will be general by mid May per Deve Hill district agricultural representative. Soil is in good working condition and rains are needed to advance pasture growth. Weather notes say a late spring across the province.
Captain L Beech details a search for Richard North by 70th Field Battery troops and RCMP in muskeg and creek terrain. The boy was located near the creek bank by Gnr Small, Gnr Gebhart, and Sgt Monck, given first aid, then evacuated by helicopter to his parents’ farm and on to hospital in Ste Rose. He resisted entering the patrol boat and kept his lunch list.
Principal Norris Aitken reported vandalism at the Mackenzie school agricultural building. Stones damaged windows on street and school grounds sides. police notified and investigation underway. The area board will have town school principals circulate warnings to stop such acts.
The area board announced teaching stall changes for the 1956 57 term with four or five new rural teachers and one in Dauphin composite high. Vacancies remain in A group rural schools at Sifton Ochre River and Makinok and one in the high school. Transfers within the area include Isobel Torrie to Ripon Edna Prokopowich to West Bay and Donna Kostiew to Dauphin elementary. Resignations effective June 30 include Hazel Bassett Ks Harris M Karpiak and K Stark.
In a remote Alonso area, Richard North nine, was found after a 96 hour search by a large volunteer effort from a 100 mile radius. He rode to Ste Rose du Lac hospital aboard a helicopter, weak but chipper, after sheltered in a swamp.
A DAUPHIN Herald letter commends Gun ners Stoyka Small Gebhart for guiding a search at Alonso that found Richard North. The writer lauds the courage endurance and leadership of the transport unit and the others who followed orders under tough conditions.
May showed a cool spell with a high of 63.2 on May 7 and a low of 23.0 on Sunday. Total precipitation was 0.73 inches from May 2 to May 8, with 0.68 inches falling on May 8. Other daily readings included 59.7/33.2 on May 3 and 63.2/34.0 on May 7.
The Dauphin-Ochre Area Rural Field Day association held its re organization meeting at Mackenzie school on May 5. The event is scheduled for Friday June 8 at the D M C grounds with W H Rampton as president and Jack McKillop as vice president. Committees cover racing parade softball diamonds and more with John Slobodzian named chief parade judge and A Roy named drill supervisor. Rampton thanked Inspector W G Booth for guidance as he departs East Kildonan.
The Dauphin Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a month long Dauphin City-Wide Sale in June to promote local business. Merchants will join with advertising kits sold at 6 dollars for the first and 5 dollars for each additional kit. S. S. Hunt is contacting merchants to secure cooperation and kit orders.
Construction on the $717,000 Indian residential school advances with two storeys rising and brick shell forming while 30 workers range through carpentry plumbing and bricklaying. Delays loom over interior work as Cotter Brothers supplies slow delivery. fencing and landscaping planned around mid August.
A Makinak school board meeting discussed retaining three teachers for 1956 57 at a continuation high school facing low high school enrollment. With nine expected high school students next fall and 48 in elementary, the loss of a government teachers grant could total about 3000. Bus service changes drew students away to Dauphin composite high school, complicating staffing needs.
At the Dauphin regional festival held at Henderson auditorium McCreary Dramatic Society and the Dauphin United Church young people's union shared six top honors. McCreary won best play for Cayenne Justice and best out of town play, with Jack Little as best actor. Dauphin United Church earned best junior play Rise and Shine and top junior actor and actress awards for Bob Willis and Georgina Munro. Ellen Dale received best actress for Idols, and Miss C S Langston won best director for The Dear Departed.
A two session town hall blood donors clinic yielded 347 donations with 179 in the afternoon and 168 in the evening. Nurses from Dauphin General Hospital supervised care, aided by St John ambulance members and Legion auxiliary volunteers.
Approximately 100 head of 4 H and farmer fed steers and calves will be on show, together with 25 Hereford, Shorthorn and Aberdeen Angus purebred bulls in the third annual Dauphin Livestock show and sale this Friday, May 11. Weighing in will take place between seven and nine a.m. The sale starts at 1 30 p.m. Bulls will be sold first, then club calves and farmer fed cattle. Two judges will be kept busy.
Miss Mary Hamilton received the Mary Hamilton trophy for long service to the Dauphin Little Theatre as she retires from teaching at the collegiate. A. J. Bert Middleditch earned the Middieditch trophy for best junior actress as the festival concluded. Presentation by Wm MecClernon with W. G. Booth announcing the awards.
