Recruiting drive targets 42 reserve units to raise 5 500 to 6 500 men with a later push for replacements. The brigade would join Atlantic Pact forces in Europe and muster at Valcartier Quebec. Units will carry reserve regimental insignia and include infantry artillery armor and engineer components.
Manitoba Education Minister W. C. Miller and Deputy R. O. MacFarlane met the Dauphin Ochre School Area No. 1 board to discuss area problems. They toured Sifton on Wednesday to consider a new school, heard a delegation from Eclipse on congestion with 36 enrolled and seven more expected, and reviewed pupil transport and a potential lean-to addition.
A large rise in children's books circulated in the junior section is linked to an extra weekly junior period. April distributions show 1,473 junior books, up 249 from March, while 1,074 senior books circulated, down 35 from March. Total circulation reached 2,547, up 214. Registration climbed to 1,234, with senior total at 614 and junior at 620. Twenty-six new books were donated, 31 purchased, and reference material on Canada and child development drew attention.
The Manitoba Council of Women met in Dauphin for its semi annual session the first time outside Winnipeg. Delegates from Winnipeg Portage la Prairie Sandview Virden Sanford Swan River Brandon and Dauphin endorsed steps to enlarge school areas and attract teachers. The main resolution urged closing schools with under 12 pupils and transporting students to nearby schools while boosting teacher recruitment improving working conditions and equal pay for women with one principal per school where possible.
Sports minded citizens will see a busy weekend of track and field in the Dauphin Ochre school area. May 31 at the fair grounds hosts the Dauphin Ochre school area meet for collegiate junior high and area schools. June 1 shifts to the D M C C grounds for rural schools rural field meet. June 2 returns to the fair grounds for an inter town track and field meet between Dauphin and Yorkton winners.
Winnipeg's Shelasd Rowhlette arrives as home economist for Manitoba extension service in the northern province. She joins two other officers opening offices in Souris and Shoal Lake. Rowhlette will serve Roblin Swen River Dauphin and Ste. Rose districts, work with 4-H clubs, ladies organizations, and the municipal office in Dauphin. She is a University of Manitoba graduate with a bachelor of science in home economics.
Ray Dicks was elected president of the Dauphin Lions club for the 1951 52 term at the annual election meeting held last Thursday in the Legion hall. Hugh Fox was re elected secretary for a second term. Other officers chosen were Odie Soles first vice president Caven Carmichael second vice president Fred Kokura treasurer Charlie Volk lion tamer Dr Adam Little Tailtwister Joe Johanneson and Jack Cowling directors for two year terms and George Bumstead director to complete two year term of Ron Everall who is leaving Dauphin shortly. Plans are now underway to bring the famous Hollywood Dare-Devils to Dauphin this year as a fund raising project to further service club work in the community.
The Dauphin-Ochre area board reports a salary schedule revision deadlock with the teachers' association over a cost-of-living clause. The board rejects raising base pay above 1500 and moves to Sept 1 1951, while arbitration remains an option. Board also approves higher mileage pay for F Tindall and raises substitute teachers' daily rate retroactive to May 1.
Dauphin Parks board passes a resolution to cut a 39 by six foot river channel behind the tourist camp to straighten the Vermillion River and ease overflow during freshets. Estimated cost about 350 dollars. Earth from the dig will be used for diking on the east bank.
Reserve unit stages a field artillery drill on Main Street on May Day weekend. A 25 pounder gun, self propelled, and limber are shown to the crowd between jeeps and a gun tractor. Officers and NCOs narrate actions while cadets march to St Paul’s Anglican church for a Sunday parade.
Threshing of last year crops and seeding of the 1951 crops are under way in the Dauphin area this week. Wet fall conditions left flax and barley unharvested but farmers are now bringing in 1950 crops. Warm weather has aided spring work and seeding is expected to be general by week’s end. Surface and sub surface moisture are satisfactory and continued good weather is seen yielding excellent crops.
Dauphin's volunteer fire brigade responded to two calls this week. Early Tuesday it tackled a tar coated railway tie fire on the town's northwest edge with thick smoke drawing many onlookers, but the blaze stayed confined to the ties. Wednesday afternoon a grass fire at 116 Merrell Avenue was contained before threatening buildings.
Mid summer temperatures stayed around the Dauphin area with nights dipping below freezing. The week’s high reached 75.6 on Monday, the low 29.9 on Sunday, and light precipitation included a trace of rain on Tuesday. The same period last year showed highs of 54.6 and lows of 21.0 on May 7.
The Dauphin regional festival of music drama and dance starts Friday in the town hall and Henderson school auditorium with music sessions running Friday to Wednesday and other sections Wednesday to Saturday. adjudicators Hubble Gibson Jarman oversee divisions and 535 entries show broad participation from Neepatra McCreary Ochre River Roblin Plains Gilbert Plains Dauphin and district. A teachers forum led by Hubble Saturday at 3 p.m. tackles festival music problems.
Thieves broke into Petersen's tea room and bakery on Main Street through a skylight between 10:30 p.m. Thursday and 3:30 a.m. Friday, stealing $21 in cash and a quantity of cigarettes. The entry followed by cutting a screen and entering through the skylight, then exit via the back door. The burglary mirrors a prior break-in at Eli Bay Ltd. next door last June.
