Town Council Session Deliberates Transient Trader Law

May 3 council debate centers on defining a transient trader and taxing Little for a proposed store. Seeding Progress Reported Across District

Herald correspondents note seeding is progressing and needs only fine weather to speed up. Land is in good shape with cool weather aiding continuous work with horses. Estimated acreage sown will rise about ten percent.

Bates and Moore Form New Legal Partnership in Winnipeg

Announcements state Mr. C. D. Bates formerly with Smith and Bates is joining Mr. W A. Moore formerly with Pitblado Hoskins and Co to form Bates and Moore. The new firm has offices in the Barmsay-Wright block and will specialize in town and farm loans and in all kinds of insurance.

Dauphin Council Votes Complaint on Equalized Assessment

The council moves to file a complaint with the Manitoba Tax Commission over the proposed equalized assessment of Dauphin buildings. A bylaw requires frontage and business taxes by June 1, 1923. A tax sale is authorized for June 22, 1923 for properties in arrears. A five year lease of agricultural grounds to the Dauphin Agricultural Society is approved with $1 payment and repair/insurance duties.

Cabaret Dance in Town Hall May 11 Aids Hospital Fund

The Town Hall hosts a cabaret dance Friday evening May 11 under the Woman's Hospital Aid Society. Proceeds go to the new hospital building fund. Mc Murray's orchestra plays until 1 AM. An exhibition 4 wheel and sex trot and other novelties will entertain attendees.

Professsor Williamson Remembered By Pupils With Gift

Pupils who took part in a recital at the Theatre on the vnd lnst held a surprise party for Professor Williamson at Mrs J Smordin s home Friday evening. Robert Waddell presented a smoking stand to honor his efforts and Williamson thanked the pupils saying future recitals should be even better.

Dauphin Musical Society Schedules Two Ballads

On Thursday May 7 the Dauphin Musical Society performs two ballads The Battle on the Baltic set to music by C Villiers Stanford with words by Thomas Campbell and The Deacon's Masterpiece or The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay with music by Percy E Fletcher The ballads are described as stirring humorous and richly arranged with printed words for patrons to follow the authors and composers intentions.

Local Patients Undergo Operations and Admissions

Mr. Stewart Baird was admitted on Sunday and is recovering well after surgery. Gerald Porter and Miss Dorothy Kelso received admissions and operations on May 4th and May 6th respectively. Mrs. Robt. Harrop and Mr. Geo. Plummer are undergoing treatment or admission. Annie Zuk had an appendicitis operation. Hubert Haines and Donald Downey underwent procedures and injuries, with Downey losing an eye. Mrs. Albert Stephenson was discharged on Saturday.

Local women convened to discuss sugar price inflation and vow to boycott the product with Winnipeg and Brandon sisters if needed. The GWVA held its second masquerade ball of the season on May 3 1923, drawing 55 couples in costume. prizes were awarded and praise given to organizers and the Ladies Auxiliary for their help.
