Mean minimum was 26.7 and a high sun total of 2195 hours along with 1.1 inches of rain and 0.41 inches of precipitation. Snow occurred on different days with a water equivalent of 0.24 inches.

Dauphin Drama Festival Awards Recognize Local Troupes

The Dauphin District Drama Festival honored Dauphin Little Theatre with two top trophies for The Red Key while McCreary Dramatic Society won for Snowbound in Kansas. Awards covered best senior and junior plays, actors, and directors across Dauphin, McCreary, Ste. Rose, and Ste. Rose High.

Merv Hamilton Scholarship Planned For Mackenzie High

A new literature scholarship will be awarded at Mackenzie high school graduation on May 24. The Merv Hamilton scholarship honors the former Dauphin teacher now living at Fort Churchill and rewards the Grade 12 student with the highest mark in literature drama and poetry.

Regional Chamber Workshop Draws Delegates in Dauphin

Sixty eight delegates representing 24 of 25 Manitoba chambers gathered in Dauphin for a full day regional board and chamber workshop. Officials including Hon. F L Jobin, M J G McMullen, W J Sheridan and Evan McCormick spoke on industrial development public affairs and Manitobas St. Lawrence Seaway outlook.

Two Historic Denphir Landmarks Demolished This Week

Two old Denphir buildings are being torn down. The Main street Bowman building, once home to James L Bowman and associates in law and the Canadian Bank of Commerce, is last of the original street structures. Next door, a frame building once tied to Theo Burrows Lumber and The Dauphin Press is cleared as Dr. W L Watson the dentist removes the site.

Weather Swing From Warm to Wet Hits Week of 20 April

The period from April 20 to May 6 brought a rapid shift from warm and dry to cold and wet. Residents noted summer visitors and activity while a trace of rain fell in the first two days and strong southerly winds stirred dust. A long‑standing high record from 1953 was mentioned.

Five Trophies Presented In Two Dauphin Arts Festival Days

By Tuesday evening the Dauphin Festival of Allied Arts entered the trophy stage. 11-year-old Joanne Mansoff won the McMurray Memorial for band instruments with 87, Allison Day shared piano forte honors and won the BPO Elks shield. Linda McNair took the Lionelles poetry cup, Wayne New announced a new Mary Hamilton trophy for spoken poetry. Choirs and vocal contests produced multiple winners including Smith-Jackson choir, DCTI mixed choir, Muriel Beer for public speaking, and Fraser Rea in sacred solo.

Top Quality For Livestock Sale May 15

Agricultural representatives Dave Hill of Dauphin and Gus Arnal of Ste Rose announce the fourth annual show and sale of registered bulls and cows on May 15 at the Dauphin live stock arena. The event features 16 Herefords, 11 Shorthorns, and five Aberdeen Angus bulls with few females, plus 75 calves from six area 4 H clubs. All bulls are calfhood vaccinated or Bang's disease tested. Fraser and Potoski Share Top Honors in History Speech Contest

Dawn Fraser and Paul Potoski topped the Grade 7 8 history public speaking contest at Smith Jackson junior high with Fraser winning the girls section and Potoski leading the boys. Runners up included Dar win Kustra Marvin Sydor and others as the event highlighted school history and public speaking.

Industrialization Plan Outlined by Minister at Chamber Conference

Hon F L Jobin minister of industry and commerce outlined a community industrialization plan at the Chamber of Commerce regional conference. He urged a five part approach including enterprise organization and a data book to attract progressive industries. A development committee would prepare growth data and a targeted mail campaign to prospective companies.

Red Shield appeal kicks off in Dauphin district

Dauphin and district launch the 1957 Red Shield appeal with a $3,000 target. Canvassing of the business area begins May 15 led by Lionel Beech. residential canvassing follows the same date. Salvation Army reports active aid over the past year including bedding clothing meals and groceries.

Two Day Clinic for Handicapped in Dauphin

Forty physically handicapped children were examined and reviewed at a two day clinic in Dauphin held Wednesday and Thursday by the Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Manitoba. The event, run with the local health unit and area physicians, benefits Easter Seal funds and March of Dimes support.

New Liquor Store Planned Building Uptrend

April building permits total $11,000 boosting year to date to $13,600, over three times the $4,200 issued by this date in 1956. Dau-Prin plans for a Liquor Control Commission store at the old rink site on R Avenue NW near First St. Five permits include a $7,000 dwelling, $2,000 for two dwellings, $1,750 for a storage building, and $250 for a private garage.
