Town and District Curlers form the Dauphin Community Curling Club to secure material site and money for a new rink. If funds and location are arranged, directors will proceed with erection of the facility.
Members discuss building a 180 by 128 foot rink with eight sheets of ice and a decker waiting room. The project includes modern heating, lighting, and plumbing with fire proof bulk storage and a War Memorial site. An offer of 2000 dollars for the old rink shares may be accepted, while 15000 dollars more will be raised by subscription for the new facility. Directors elected represent town rural and student groups with a 12 member board.
Acting for the wartime price and trade board A Katz announced five convictions for ceiling price violations linked to car prices. James A Blair paid 100 fine and costs after paying over the ceiling for a truck. he paid 1375 when the ceiling was 729. Reichert fined 75 and costs for false information. Andrew Adams and Alan Watts of Security Motors Winnipeg were fined 200 and costs for a fake return. Peter Chaplain fined 100 and costs for paying over ceiling price and for false statements and returns.
Roger Watson received a life membership at the Dauphin curling club annual meeting. A longtime curler for 40 years he missed only last season while away. He first curled in 1905, witnessed a small club then with about 85 members and served four terms as club president.
Dauphin Parks Board raised rents for tourist cabins and trailer camp at Walker Park. Tourist cabins now cost 1.50 per day with electricity extra. trailers 1.00 per day. Monthly cabin rate set at 25.00. four of ten cabins currently rented to families seeking shelter. Park nursery trees to be thinned and offered to the Dauphin Country Club for golf course planting.
A government appointed committee will hold a public hearing in Dauphin on June 6 and 9 to assess adult education work. The panel invites interested people to attend and present their ideas and reports on current efforts and progress.
The Dauphin Collegiate school board approved a new salary schedule Friday night. Female teachers start at 1600 with 100 yearly increments for four years to 2000. Unmarried men begin 1700 with 100 steps to 2100, while married men start 1800 with 100 steps for five years to 2300. Increases depend on favorable reports from the inspector and principal. Effective Sept. 1.
Lt Cal G M Chautenoil will address a Sunday evening rally at the Dauphin theatre to launch the Save the Food campaign in Dauphin and district. The effort urges bread conservation amid global wheat shortages with a poster contest, school displays, and pledges from local restaurants to avoid serving bread unless requested.
In Dauphin, fourteen nurses received diplomas and medals at a Friday evening graduation in the United church. The event featured white uniforms, a Florence Nightingale oath, and speeches by Hon. Ivan Shultz. A bursary fund was announced to support post graduate study for graduates.
A six day period from May 2 to May 7 brought 1.22 inches of precipitation, the heaviest rain snow mix on Sunday. Seeding paused but expected to resume end of week if conditions clear. Temperatures ranged from 27 to 51.2 degrees. Last year during similar stretch, highs reached 68.7 and lows 29 with 0.77 inches of precipitation.
Mrs F Langshaw was reelected president of the Ladies Auxiliary BESL at their annual meeting in the GWVA hall. Others named include treasurer Mrs W J Coppell and warden Mrs B Day with executive council members listed by name.
Three stretches of road remained in poor condition after weekend rain and snow. The affected areas include the Ste. Rose to Ochre River route, a three mile section west of Dauphin, and a 13 mile stretch on No. 5 west of Dauphin. The frost is retreating and road conditions are improving as ground dries. Buses are operating on all routes.
The monthly school board meeting recommended scholarships for pubic and collegiate students. Prizes range from 10 to 50 dollars across grades seven to XI, with equal prizes in each collegiate grade and separate general and matriculation courses. A music supervisor is sought, and $25 was sent to Fred Douglas for 30 years of service. A six month leave request for Albertson was noted. Installation of a stoker at Smith Jackson school would save about $200. Continued on Page 8 Col 1.
