By 31 March Britain’s Labor government endured its closest challenge since Feb 23. In a tie splitting session, James Milner chairs as Labor, facing an appropriation vote for the ministry. The House divided 278 to 278 on a Conservative motion to reduce transport spending by £1000, risking prestige if defeated.
Canada’s two large railways Canadian Pacific and Canadian National urge a further rate increase in a joint letter to Labor Minister Mitchell. They propose settling wage hour disputes per federal conciliation board reports but warn implementing the board findings announced April 15 could cost between 19.225 and 27 million dollars and would require higher public charges.
Hoover urges a new United Nations excluding Soviet bloc states to prevent war yet risks deepening the split. Truman and Austin avoided comment while anti Communist figures defend the universal body as a bridge. Critics warn the plan would worsen the current U.N. crisis and Chinese representation deadlock.
Australia considers a placetime form of selective national service to reinforce defense. Defense Minister Eric J. Harrison announced in London that a draft bill would be designed to give fullest effect to Australia’s defensive responsibilities.
News from the weekend reports Britain has been granted cooperation with Canada on grain trade. The program will start immediately and run through August 31, with shipments under the grain bag initiative continuing thereafter.
The Manitoba division of the Canadian Red Cross Society acknowledges the Dauphin chamber of commerce offer to assist flood victims in south eastern Manitoba and says the chamber will be called upon if further help is needed. The letter from R. H. Snyder notes ongoing relief efforts and potential national emergency status.
Dauphin volunteers begin an 18 week program to standardize operations across all 18 members. Three groups meet Monday Tuesday and Wednesday evenings with aims to cover pumpers first aid knots extin guishers and oil and gas fire fighting. After the course demonstrations and group competitions will test proficiency.
Six district boar clubs from Dauphin area placed among the top 12 in the second annual Get-Of-Sire bacon contest overseen by Manitoba Agriculture. Grandview took third while Dauphin, Ste. Rose, Fishing River, Ethelbert and Oak Brae also ranked. Boissevain won with 87.9, Strathclair second, Grandview third. about 40 entries province-wide. prize money funded by T. Eaton Co. and awarded at a Friday meeting in Dauphin with John H. Conner presenting.
Dauphin Agricultural Society officials report full swing preparations for the annual summer fair set for July 24 25 and 26. Prize lists are being printed and a Boyle Woolfolk Chicago contract for grand stand attractions is under signing. R W Davis of Wisconsin to start races and supply starting gate. Dominion government grant talks for moving the site proceeding. Red Cross total reported at 1557 40.
Bert Geiger 65 longtime Dauphin districtman retires after 41 years in Manitoba Telephone Service ending April. He began in 1930 and has seen Dauphin exchange grow from about 400 to 1300 town telephones with rural lines. staff expanded from six to twenty. Born 1884 in Kingsley Michigan his career began in Michigan 1898 and spanned Canada from Winnipeg to Dauphin and Swan River. He will travel with his wife Morley Geiger to the West Coast eventually.
The Dauphin area reports snowfalls totaling over an inch this week with temperatures ranging from 19.4 above to 41.2 above zero. Last year at this time records reached 88.5 above and 83.3 low on April 28 and May 2 saw 36.9 below with a high of 72.3.
Dauphin Ochre School Area board instructed Bay Centre Dickson and Fairville districts to choose site locations for three new schools to be built this summer. The plan mirrors the Sandringham project with minor changes. Tenders have been called. Fairville voters supported keeping the current site at a recent electors meeting despite district requests to move or delay construction.
District No 3 of the Canadian Legion reports all branches financially sound with rising memberships amid a national drive. Gilbert Plains leads with 20 visiting members as district considers an annual veterans rally to begin at Gilbert Plains next summer.
Two new flying students started lessons at Dauphin Air Services this week, marking the first lady student to enroll. The trainees are Dorothy Rocknell and Frank Adams, beginning their flying training under the program.
Nearly 200 attendees at the Dauphin branch annual banquet heard guest speaker E. L. Russenholt of Winnipeg emphasize wildlife and forest conservation in the prairie provinces. Flags, films on hunting and fishing season reminders highlighted the event with leadership from H Rampton and E D Palmer.
