Marvin Virstiuk of Ethelbert faced a manslaughter charge at the fall assizes for the death of Nick Polly aged 45. Polly, riding a bicycle, was struck after Virstiuk allegedly passed on the wrong side of the road near a stretch of ice that covered the highway.

Bush Fires Hit Riding Mountain Park Trans Canada
Fires destroyed the old saw mill site near Onanole Manitoba at the park entrance and spread into the reserve. Hot dry weather and high winds hampered fight efforts and led Superintendent Heaslip to recruit several hundred men. Reports also noted outbreaks at Audy Lake and Grandview areas in the park.

A Dauphin Agricultural Society committee circulates rules for an annual rural school improvement contest. Awards focus on shelter belts fence and grounds improvements and school buildings. First prize goes to the single greatest improvement with judges appointed and visits planned in late June or early July so winning pupils may attend the summer fair. Directors host four winning schools with free grounds grandstand and midway rides.

Certificates Presented To St John Ambulance Group
A social evening and dance by the St John Ambulance association in the Ar moury on April 29 saw nearly 60 members receive first aid certificates for winter courses and spring exams. In rural competition Spruce Bluff won a community first aid kit, with Dickson second and Mrs J McEwen achieving top rural score. Mrs J Maynard and Mrs C Kilty accepted the award for the group. In the general group certificates vouchers and labels were given to first, second and third year members, presented by W J Easterbrook.

No Arbor Day Holiday Declared by Local Merchants
Dauphin business houses will not observe Arbor Day on Monday May 8 this year as a holiday. The retail merchants association met and decided the Thursday half day keeps business orderly and Arbor Day would cause confusion. A second holiday on Saturday May 20 was also dismissed unless a federal proclamation affects nationwide observance. A delegation will seek a civic holiday on the first Monday in August similar to other Manitoba towns.

Nick Kuba aged 25 of Pine River district was found guilty of robbery with violence and received a two year hard labor sentence. His co-accused J Bilinski of Pine River district got four months hard labor. The robbery occurred Easter Monday at John Stephaniuk’s home, yielding 10.45 dollars. This follows a series of violent crimes including the -death of pensioner Mrs. Anna Cottick last May and earlier convictions.
