Premier Duplessis aims for a fourth straight mandate in the Quebec general election on June 20. The Liberals mount an all-out bid to wrest power from Duplessis amid shifting party lines.
Two oil burning blast heaters were set to clear the D.M.C.C. arena ice last Thursday and by Sunday only the earth surface remained. The heaters, each as powerful as four home furnaces, could heat a small home for a year. Saturday night may see extra heat if needed for comfort before Lion-O night sponsored by the Dauphin Lions Club.
A joint rural and town council meeting on April 2 vetoed private cemetery operation in the district and approved raising cemetery lot prices to 35 for adults and 17.50 for children. Proposals by John Hegel to create a prepaid private burial ground were rejected as a public responsibility issue. The plan to take Riverside Cemetery under private control was discussed but dismissed.
The two day Dauphin Regional Drama Festival begins tonight with adjudicator George Werner of Winnipeg. Thursday offerings include Cayenne Justice, Rise and Shine, and In Port. Friday features Idols, Almost Seventeen, and The Dear Departed.
Readers may notice a change in the Dauphin Herald and Press mast head as the old English style has been replaced. The new Bodoni Bold type with italic short and is cast on the Ludlow machine in 72 and 60 point sizes on the front page and 60 and 48 point sizes on the social page. The Devinne type, used since 1907, was retired after the printing plate wore out.
Response to the sixth blood donor clinic today is encouraging with appointments reported for both sessions at the town hall starting 2 PM. Albert Redgate notes the evening slot is full while afternoon donors can still be accommodated between 4 and 5 PM.
An April 13 hayride accident near a Banks district school left one girl missing and later rescued. Eight-year-old Eddie Cardiff helped fetch aid while Mina Foster was trapped under hay in icy water but revived by brother Graham’s CPR. All children recovered with minor injuries and were back at school.
Norris G. Aitken told the area board that space pressure will force two additional classrooms in the current auditorium and allow limited non-resident enrollment for academic courses. The plan excludes shop and commercial classes and aims to ease crowding until the Mackenzie auditorium is completed, with two grade XI classes and three grade X classes for 1956-57.
The area board ratified salary increases for teaching staff with raises of 80 to 100 dollars and a 120 annual grant for teachers completing a fourth year in arts science or pedagogy. One year experience rises to 2400, two years to 2480, and three years to 2530, with the maximum salary awaiting.
April brought Dauphinites long cold winds and low temperatures with 268.7 hours of sunshine. Three days had measurable precipitation including a trace of rain and 24 inches of snow. the high reached 51.6, the low 12, and the monthly mean 29.1.
Under a by law teachers receive a $290 raise, lifting the top salary from $3,100 to $3,300. The adjustment targets the highest pay tier and reflects updated compensation for district instructors.
Dauphin Ochre area trustees sought compensation for nearly $15,000 in basic grants lost after provincial equalization. In a reply, Education Minister W C Miller said increased 1955 expenditures due to more teachers left no distributive surplus and the government would not reduce overall education funding despite higher assessments.
The Dauphin Ochre area board discussed a remittance of 533 dollars that covered three school vans but omitted the school bus grants totaling about 3500 dollars. Secretary E Johansen said he had written to the education department with no reply yet. The board considers inviting the education minister but awaits department clarification.
At the Lions Club dinner on April 30 George Bumstead was elected president for the coming year. Officers include Don Ray as first vice president Clinton Bingham as second vice president Bill Crossley as third vice president Clayton Scott as secretary Bill Robson as treasurer Ray Dennison and George Delaney as directors for two years Lou Sauve and Harvey Buckwold as just one year dive Ted Fewanchyshyn as lion tamer and Bob Rodger as tail twister. Induction ceremony set for Monday June 25.
The 1956 Red Shield appeal in Dauphin began Tuesday with a 4 050 quota to fund local needs. Campaign chair Jack Henderson and committee members S J Heggie A Hagglund J D Kelis and Mrs W K Marsh lead the drive. Last year Dauphin district required about 1 000 in subsidy and emergency relief covered groceries meals beds transport fuel medicine and clothing for many. About 1 500 literature pieces were distributed to shut ins in hospitals homes and prisons with treats for Christmas and Easter.
Dauphin rural municipality council authorized tendering for three road builds north of 21 26 20 east of 36 26 20 and north of NW 1 26 20 with a 24 foot top and 30 inch elevation. Tenders due by May 22. Culvert work and dike repairs approved with Ed McQuay to repair bridge floors at about 1000 dollars.
The Henderson auditorium audience witnessed a three show run of Mr Roberts revealing life aboard the AK 601 during WWII. Lieut Roberts battles career limits while officers and crew plot to help him reach combat duty ending in a poignant transfer and death. Jack Nixon masterfully anchors the title role with strong support from Dr C C Wright as the ship’s doctor.
Town council approved transferring employees to a group retirement pension plan with the Manitoba Urban Association. Great West Life non group annuity is terminated and pensions are expected to rise about 25 percent. The plan sets retirement ages at 65 for men and 60 for women, with formal ratification to follow.
Preparations are underway for the third Dauphin Livestock Show and Sale at the Dauphin livestock arena on Friday May 11. Judging begins after the 9 a.m. opening, with the sale at 1 30 p.m. Sponsored by the Northern Manitoba Livestock Association and the Dauphin Agricultural Society. Auctioneer J R Blacklock of Saskatoon. Bulls include 11 Shorthorns and 13 Herefords plus three Shorthorn females, with notable contributors and multiple breeders listed.
