War Memorial Committee Holds First Meeting

A Dauphin community group formed a War Memorial committee through the board of trade to plan a postwar project. They favor a community centre with gym, auditorium, clubrooms and library, plus parking, and split into three subcommittees to gauge public opinion, locate sites, and study building plans.

Long Hard Road to Berlin Highlighted at Victory Loan Rally

Wing Cmdr R M Frayne spoke at the Eighth Victory Loan rally in Dauphin Theatre tracing the road to Berlin through major WWII milestones. He praised Allied efforts, shared anecdotes from his service, urged support with fighting dollars, and noted films and community singing capped the evening. Stalin announced Berlin captured in London dispatches.

By week end 987 applications filed at the War Finance office totaling 292 050 49 dollars toward the 590 000 unit 38 quota. Applicants reach about 41 percent of the 2 400 buyer target with 813 subscribers contributing 98 550 to date. Tuesday bond sales hit 77 039 000 versus 74 343 750 last campaign. Eight day total reaches 577 041 150 against 575 813 500 in the prior drive.

Over 1200 X Rays Taken in Two Days at T B Clinic

More than 1,200 chest x rays were taken in the first two days of the tuberculosis survey in Dauphin district with a daily capacity of 1,000 plates. 500 school children attended Monday and 765 x rays were recorded on Tuesday.

A large blood donor clinic was held Tuesday morning in the G W V A hall with donations received from 61 volunteers. Among them were 51 men and 10 women. Donors came from No 7, No 10, Laurier, Borketon, Magnet and Dauphin.

Town and Rural May Compromise On School Levy

Town and rural officials open the door to a compromise on the 1945 school levy equalization after a conference of town and rural solicitors and council representatives. The proposed shift would double the rural assessment in the Crescent subdivision, altering the 1945 ratio to town 65 711 and rural 8 228 from the current 64 018 to 9 981. The plan, designed for this year only, bases new figures on total rural tax assessment and awaits finance committee review before final action.
