Local Council of Women Hosts Educational Talk on Junior High Progress

The Local Council of Women met in the Host Room on Monday to hear Mia Gordon discuss the journey of education and the need for free libraries. Mrs Watt urged stock-taking of educational systems and warned against slang and poor English as two progressive moves for Dauphin, followed by J W N McFadden detailing Junior High School concepts and the Dauphin board’s mixed decisions on its housing and funding.

Public Utility Board Sits At Dauphin For Bus Licences

Manitoba Public Utility Board meets in Dauphin to hear applications for Certificates to operate public service vehicles. Thomas J. Clark seeks a Dauphin to Swan River freight license. Cyril Bates seeks a Dauphin to Brandon passenger service with daily trips. The board will decide soon. Neepawa changeover currently serves the route.

Farewell for H E Fox as he leaves Dauphin for Edmonton

About 76 Dauphin friends gathered at the Elks Hall on a Saturday evening to bid farewell to H E Fox before his departure to Edmonton Alta. Fox has lived in the town nine years and led the Dauphin branch of Rogers Fruit Co now moving to manage a Brown Fruit Co branch in Edmonton.

Death of Mrs Joseph Smith recalls Dauphin sister

Mrs. Joseph Smith of Calgary formerly of Dauphin died in Calgary on Friday April 25. She will be recalled to Dauphin residents as Miss Martha Robinson, a sister of Mrs. Ernest Mulligan. She is survived by her husband two sisters Mrs Mulligan and Mrs J E McLeod of Toronto and a brother Herbert. The latter and Mr and Mrs Mulligan of Dauphin attended the Calgary funeral.

Dauphin Leads Spring Cleaning Efforts for Townwide Cleanup

For the first time, Dauphin shifts from driving to leading its spring cleanup. Gangs of men clean gutters and collect paper and rubbish while vacant-property owners are urged to tidy their lots. Refuse spots remain at rear locations but public demand for cleanliness should push them out. Mayor and council ask citizens to maintain clean premises. recalcitrants will be addressed.

A special Board of Trade meeting is planned tonight in the Town Hall. Representatives from the agricultural and tourist publicity committees will report, followed by an address by Mr. E. J. Light on The Canada to Canal Highway Proposal.

Municipal Levy Cuts Set For Dauphin and District

The provincial base reduces 1930 municipal levies by about half of 1929. Total 1930 levy for Dauphin and Rural Municipality drops to 1,183,624.17, with payments due by February 16, 1931. Dauphin town faces a 3,380,623 cut and Rural Municipality 6,796.23 cut. 1929 vs 1930 figures show Dauphin town 7,561.19 dropping to 4,180.56 and BR Municipality 15,200.57 dropping to 404.34.

Professor Warren Explains Solar Eclipse For Winnipeg Audience

In anticipation of the April 28 eclipse Professor Warren of Winnipeg spoke Friday April 25 at Mackenzie termmm o. He described lunar eclipses, the telescope’s impact on planetary knowledge and predicted further discoveries with stronger lenses. A large audience heard lantern illustrations and a thanks ended the talk.

Miss Sarah Bubbles Ashe died Sunday from scarlet fever complicated by pneumonia. Born May 2, 1909 in Gladstone Manitoba, she was daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Ashe and lived near Gladstone before moving to Dauphin two years ago. Funeral Monday was led by Rev A W Lochead at Riverside Cemetery.

United WMS meeting reflects on China work and mission history

The Faster thank offering meeting at St James Church chaired by Mrs. D. D. McDonald featured Rev. A W Lochead’s talk on The Work in China. He traced early Christian efforts, the Viteature Society’s past thirty years, and current cooperative methods within the Chinese church. A vocal solo and a letter from Miss Jean Bates were read. 100 Cords Wood Lost in Fire Near Dauphin

William Cruise of Dauphin reported a fire on Friday April 25 that consumed about 100 cords of green poplar wood piled at the foot of Fiding Mountain seven miles south of Dauphin. Neighbors Methven brothers and C Blackburn saved about 40 cords. the blaze traced to a neglected camp fire.

Arbor Day Proclaimed in Manitoba on May 12 1930

Posters issued by the Department of Agriculture proclaim Monday May 12 1930 as Arbor Day urging tree planting and observance by citizens. Proclamations signed by Hon D L McLeod provincial secretary call on municipal religious and school bodies to assist in the holiday's objectives.

Death of Mrs Fawcett Passes at Riverside Cemetery

Mrs J B Fawcett widow of Rev J B Fawcett and formerly Rachel Ann Mason was born January 18 1855 in King County Ontario. She came to Manitoba 28 years ago with her first husband Rev David Cattanach who died in 1912. Survived by five sons from the first marriage and two brothers and a sister. Funeral at United Church with interment in Riverside cemetery.
