Merry Time at Elks Annual Barn Dance

The Elks No 57 held a second annual barn dance drawing about 55 attendees. The hall featured makeshift barn decor and a hay seat arrangement with an informal dress code of overalls and gingham. Master of ceremonies J W Johnston led the evening while a quadrille contest crowned winners RK Fagen with Mrs E McClarty and others.

Concert of music greatly enjoyed by Winnipeg guests

A Wednesday evening choir concert in Winnipeg featured a thirty-voice mixed choir under A Marshall Neal. Mr and Mrs Geo Cranston sang duets and solos, with Mrs Grace Cranston and Mr George Cranston delivering multiple numbers to warm applause.

Power By Law Gets Second Reading In Town Council

An adjourned meeting of the town council led by Councillor Brewer approved the second reading of the by law authorizing a $75,000 debenture loan to extend and replace the Electric Light and Power plant. A public meeting was set for April 12 at 7 p.m. to explain the by law and power plant issues with Major N M Hall slated to attend.

Fire accident at Birch River harms two boys

At Birch River on Saturday evening March 17, curious youths fiddled with a gasoline can. A match caused a flare up and two others ran into the spill. Gordon Ross suffered a severe burn on his right thigh while Arthur Honeysett was burned on the face. Dr. Onhauser of Bowsman treated them. both were covered in snow to extinguish flames and will wear masks for now. The Honeysetts were formerly from Dauphin.

Children’s Home Finance Committee Appeals For Support

The Finance Committee of the Children's Home plans an April 3 and 4 canvass to raise funds for another year. Citizens are urged to contribute any amount to sustain the institution which provides essential aid in the community.

Dauphin Public Notice For Governor General Visit

The town and rural officials welcome His Excellency the Governor General and Viscountess Willingdon. A wreath ceremony, an address of welcome, and tours of local schools and a hospital are planned. The train arrives at 16 oclock a.m. and departs at 1 p.m. Civic Holiday set from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 2.

Fines Imposed Under New Liquor Act

Chief Geo. Smith reported several convictions in the town last week under the new liquor act. A man was fined 50 dollars plus costs for giving intoxicating drinks to minors, with the boys fined 5 dollars plus 9.75 dollars in costs each. Another offender faced a 19.75 dollar fine and costs for driving an automobile while intoxicated.

Ottawa Passes Tariff Amendment On Automobiles

A West benefiting tariff amendment was approved in the committee of ways and means by Finance Minister J A Robb. The bill splits auto duties into two brackets with 20 percent on cars worth up to 1200 and 27 percent on higher priced autos. The change bases duty on factory price plus freight and removes freight charges from the taxed amount.

Silver Tea at St. Pauls Church in April

The G B W A of St Pauls Church will hold a silver tea from 3 to 6 PM at the home of Mrs Cunningham 238 3rd Ave NE on Saturday April 21. Proceeds go to church missions and community work.

Miss Alice Muse Wins Dauphin Oratorical Final

Miss Muse of Roblin won the district International Oratorical contest final in Dauphin and will represent the constituency in the provincial final at Winnipeg. The event featured six contestants including Miss Degagnier and Miss Craik with music by local performers and judges Geadron MirDonald Lyon McFadden and Mrs Everall.
