Britain faces a nationwide strike by about ten million workers in key industries. Engineering and allied shipyard workers joined the walkout, halting work across belts nationwide. A notable impact is a $52,000,000 pipeline materials contract for Trans-Canada, with production halted at Stockton on Tees.
A rushed settlement of a railway labor dispute followed by talks aimed at ending a broad industrial walkout. Unions threaten to widen strikes to 43 plants employing 3,000,000 by April 6 unless a 10 percent pay raise is secured. Government urges face to face talks as negotiations begin Monday.
A two storey frame mill in Sifton burned after midnight on Wednesday with no salvageable machinery or records. Fire started near the mill and spread, with volunteer firefighters confining the blaze while a nearby house sustained minor damage, and about 20 workers were affected. No one was inside the plant when the fire broke out and no stock was removed.
A blaze damaged a wool mill causing loss of records and money but some coins and records were saved. Owner Wesel ski Weselowski considers rebuilding but has not decided when to resume work. The mill had planned a temporary closure after the fire and supplied woollen goods and spun material across the region.
During the week of March 19 to 25 the weather stayed generally pleasant with a notable warmth on Wednesday reaching near 45 degrees. A slow progression of unsettled air brought more moving centers across the country and the last four days saw precipitation with traces of rain on Friday Monday Saturday and Sunday. April showers expected soon.
Town council, facing rising policing costs, postpones RCMP rate revision to June 1 1958 and maintains a seven man force with plans to hire a meter patrolman. Estimated policing cost for 1957 rises to 322200. prior year 18191. Applications for a parking meter patrolman will be invited, with April 22 meeting to review.
Ernest Obhryn, instrument man with the town of Dauphin for three years, resigns effective April 15 to become engineer for the town of Swan River. Born in Dauphin, he spent time in Ontario and returned three years ago to his current post.
Dr. C C Wright schedules polio vaccine clinics for children six months to five years old across the health unit district. First doses run April 2 to April 29 at designated sites, with second doses May 7 to June 3. Victoria Day shift moves Gilbert Plains centre to May 27 and June 3 becomes a Monday. Expectant mothers may receive vaccine with family doctor consent. If a child misses a first dose, attend another advertised clinic.
Bermuda conference coverage notes a U S decision to join the Baghdad pact as a full member amid British push for American military cooperation in Middle East strategy against communism. The move draws Arab opposition while Britain seeks Commonwealth consultation and a Canada Europe trade path.
Fire chief and council delayed a decision on adding a fourth stall to the fire hall. The town engineer will prepare a cost estimate for April 8 session as Dauphin fire department representative George H. Scott spoke on behalf of the department claiming the move was made for operational reasons.
The Dauphin water works will fluoridate the town supply as soon as equipment arrives. Council authorized the purchase and installation of fluoridation gear at an estimated cost of 3200 dollars. Councillors Dicks and McLean considered a public referendum but the majority saw no adverse opinion and voted to proceed.
Dauphin council unanimously refused to enter an agreement to take over operation and maintenance of a proposed Lions Club swimming pool. Architects estimated 35 000 for outdoor construction plus 5 000 for a circulating system with annual upkeep around 2 000 to 3 000 dollars.
At a March 20 1957 meeting the Dauphin fire department urges council to approve the fourth stall installation arguing it will provide a lasting facility for 20 to 25 years and support a growing rescue wagon unit now in operation.
Town council passes a dog by law aiming for stricter control of dogs in Dauphin. The by law also grants first second and third readings to a measure governing the hiring and duties of a poundkeeper and a dog catcher and their assistants.
A report by town engineer E M Erickson notes the present extraction rate of 500 000 gallons daily yields a reserve of 455 million gallons or about 910 days two years. A pipeline from Edwards Lake could raise usable reserve to 1 917 days roughly 5 1/2 years and improve water quality. Council approved preparing cost estimates for the Edwards Lake pipeline project No 10 highway. The by law 2413 set license fees and dog control rules.
The council debated options for another stall and track with differing views. Councillor Alf Buckwold favored a rescue wagon to improve insurance prospects, while Councillor Oliphant supported a rescue wagon but remained unsure.

Henry Jebson, 69, of Pine River died Saturday afternoon while on bridge construction between Pine River and Pulp River. He suffered burns when a tar kettle caught fire as a Department of Highways crew worked on the decking. Jebson was buried in Pine River cemetery Wednesday after a 2 pm funeral at Pine River United Church.
Three large RC AF helicopters flown by two pilots from Okanagan Helicopter Limited arrived in Dauphin on Tuesday en route to stations on the Mid-Canada Radar Line. Each craft carries 10 men for patrol and supply duties. refueling followed landing at 12:30 PM with takeoff at 2:10 PM for Cranberry Portage and Bird River in The Pas area.
The Red Cross will hold a Friday blitz with about 100 volunteer canvassers led by Bob Dodds to meet a $3,500 goal. Local service and women’s groups back the effort as cards circulate in downtown businesses and will be collected later this week.
John W. McCallum was chosen as district No 3 representative for the Manitoba and Northwest Ontario Legion, succeeding William Johanneson of Winnipeg. Jack Graves of McCreary was elected deputy representative as the Port Arthur convention nears in June.
About 200 members and friends of the Dauphin Game and Fish Association attended the annual banquet and dance last Thursday. Dr H S Perdue and Angus Gavin spoke, presenting 1956 and 1955 trophies for deer heads and fish. Winners included Wally Gostulak, Bob McGimpsey, Art Harris, Horace Wooster, Ed Childs, Larry Williamson, and A E Bud Childs.
