The 7 000 strong force will arrive March 29 aboard the RCN aircraft carrier Bonaventure. Fighting breaks out in three villages near Ghaziveran with Turkish Cypriots killed. A Canadian patrol supports UN efforts as villagers cheer.
Dauphin rural council approved the 1964 budget at a special meeting, setting an overall tax rate of 61 mills down from 60. The rate comprises 26 mills for school purposes and 35 mills for municipal needs. Figures show levies for 1963 and 1964 with detailed amounts for each category.
The five day program runs March 30 to April 3 at Dauphin town hall with awards and a public dance Friday night. Manitoba agriculture staff and local officials will run the course for 100 plus youths aged 14 to 20, about half in 4H. Girls are welcome in the home making segment and town girls will meet entrants from out of town. Activities include farm tours, lectures, and judging sheep, swine, carcasses, grain, beef, and dairy cattle.
The Keld road runs southeast from its junction with PTH 5 and 10 six miles west of Dauphin. RM seeks cost survey to assess building and maintenance needs along the route.
Councils of Ochre River and Dauphin rural municipalities last week appointed members to the new Weed Control District board. D. J. Hii is named as the Dauphin area representative.
The Dauphin Little Theatre production of The Beyond scored three home runs as audiences filled three performances last week. A lively, uproarious musical comedy by Sandy Wilson, it unfolds in a girls school a beach and a carnival with vivid costumes and energetic performances. Directed by Jackie Opski and featuring Nancy Gary Nicholson Fay Sheila Belton and others the show drew strong applause and enthusiastic response.
Manitoba Telephone System will implement lower station to station long distance rates starting March 29. The move, approved February 20 by the Public Utilities Board, targets calls both originating and terminating within Manitoba. The new schedule aims to push the share of station to station calls from about 65 percent toward 80 percent, with examples of the new day rates to follow.
Plans for the 30th annual Garden Show to be held August 21 were announced by the Horticultural Society. Officials say the event will include a formal style and improved design, with invitations and programs ready for members.
Ratepayers voted 1 479 ballots with 56.8 percent against and 41.4 percent in favor of financing artificial ice at the DMCA Skating arena. Turnout was 47.3 percent. 25 ballots were rejected. The by law required 66 percent assent for passage, leaving the fund short of the objective and the debt issuance defeated. Expenditures and income details for the artificial ice fund are reported, with a current balance around 14,869.87 and receipts totaling 17,761.81.
