Hospital Trustees Gather in Winnipeg for Institute

Thirty six trustees from the region attended a trustees' institute at the Boulevard hotel on Monday March 22. They aimed to set up a guide for new trustees covering duties, board governance, hospital administration, medical relations, staff and auxiliaries, with H A Crewson and H E Heaton providing guidance during sessions on current issues and purchasing controls.

Music Festival Opens March 31 Entries Up

The festival features kindergarten to adult choirs and piano classes with Mil A singers and solos. Sessions run Wednesday to Saturday with a final concert. Admission 25 cents for sessions and 50 cents for the final. Adjudicator Gordon Hancock of Regina brings a strong musical background.

Red Cross Fund Reaches 1527 in Dauphin Campaign

Dauphin Red Cross drive led by lan M. MacGregor reports 1 527 93 raised with returns from last week’s canvass still to come. Goal is 1800. residents missed by volunteers are urged to donate at local chartered banks.

Dauphin Hospital Nurses Set June Reunion Across Regions

Graduates from Dauphin General Hospital since 1901 will reunite June 29 and 30. About 250 addresses have been collected by Mrs. B E Haywood and a 15 member local committee plans a luncheon hospital tour reception coffee gathering and banquet with guest speakers. Invitations extend to graduates in Nova Scotia New York British Columbia Kansas and other areas with over 100 expected.

Dauphin clubs push a building fund for a new school for retarded children reaching $30,000 with $10,000 still needed. Art Jones presented a $1,860 cheque completing their $10,000 pledge as Lions and Kinsmen donate the cost of a classroom. Salary Dispute To Arbitration In Dauphin Ochre Area

The Dauphin Ochre area school board and Division No 33 Manitoba Teachers Society will submit their salary dispute to an independent arbitration board after a conciliation meeting led by A E Koppel. Each party must name a representative within seven days, and the three member board will issue a binding award effective Sept 1. This marks the fourth arbitration in 18 years, with prior rulings in 1959 and 1964.

Minister Harry Hays to visit Dauphin for talks

Canada’s Minister of Agriculture Harry Hays will speak at the Dauphin Federal Liberal association meeting at 2 pm Monday in Eleventh Avenue hall and attend a noon luncheon at the Kings Hotel. Hays, longtime Calgary mayor and cattle breeder, is known for exporting purebred livestock and ties to the Calgary Stampede.

Federal prize money program discussed for Manitoba fairs

Representatives from A and Prair boards met in Portage la Prairie on Friday March 12 to review a new federal prize money grant aid program for major farm fairs and exhibitions. The plan, sent by Ottawa to Hon. Harry Hays, aims to restore emphasis on utility in purebred livestock and reduce exhibit costs while boosting spectator interest. The Dauphin Agricultural Society sent Garnet Maynard and Adam Nicholson to join federal and provincial delegates to discuss beef and dairy classifications and a 50 percent federal prize payment in Manitoba classes. Also present were Don Nicholson Harold Scotchmer Fred Bolan Deputy Minister W E Jarvis Helgi Austman and Frank Muirhead. A key feature is a reduced number of classes with seven beef and nine dairy breed classes plus an inter-breed udder class to qualify for funds.

First Annual Meeting For Dauphin Senior Homes Held March 31

Final architectural plans for Dauphin's first senior citizens housing project near completion. Pratt Lindgren & Associates of Winnipeg updated plans and will push for detailed specifications at the March 31 meeting to invite tenders for spring construction. Six residents will be elected directors, with two-year, three-year, and one-year terms. The charter directors and officers are listed, with council representation and membership rules defined.

First Day of Spring Brings Record Cold in Dauphin

The official arrival of spring in Dauphin on Sunday March 21 featured subzero weather with winds up to 20 mph and scattered snowfall totaling 0.11 inch. Three records fell: -25 on Monday, -17 on March 20 1930, and -15 on March 19 1955, with a new low maximum of 0 degrees above and a forecast of clear and cold conditions.

Furnishings Fund Sought to Complete Housing Project

Dauphin Senior Citizens Home construction hinges on local fundraising after provincial grant and CMHC loan. Ed Johansen noted a remaining shortfall of about 18 000 dollars plus 5 090 to 6 000 more for furnishings. The project has 36 000 from the province and 80 000 CMHC loan, with total costs reduced from 141 900 to 134 000.

Sutherland Retires From CN After 47 Years Of Service

Milton James Slim Sutherland retires from the Canadian National Railway as locomotive foreman after 47 years begun in Neepawa in 1918. A stag party at the Armories honored him with gifts including a bowling ball tool chest transistor radio and money. The Sutherlands will live in Dauphin on River Avenue.
