A spring thaw spreads across Canada with milder weather and more jobs. Between February 9 and March 2 the unemployed total fell by 5 000 to 375 900 as workers in British Columbia return to logging camps sawmills and construction projects. Hiring rises in leather clothing agricultural implement factories and stopyards accompany the recovery.
Belgium's coalition government resigns after Liberal ministers demand cabinet Catholics adjust stance on restoring exiled King Leopold. A national referendum had shown 57.6 percent in favor of Leopold's return, undermining Premier Gaston Eyskens who had hoped to invite the king back.
Prime Minister Attlee’s Labor government secures three confidence votes despite Conservative attacks on nationalization housing and spending. A 14 vote first test, then 25 vote housing approval and a 19 vote spending defeat of the censure motion, with Cripps acknowledging health service limits. In Halifax, eleven crew died when the Nova Scotia trawler Gertrude De Costa collided with the island Connector and sank. Six were rescued. two bodies recovered.
The 1950 estimated expenditures for the Dauphin Ochre school area No 1 total $364,650 a $10,674.89 drop from 1949 actuals. Tax revenue falls to $207,994 while government grants rise to $144,496 and $2,160 comes from teacherage rentals.
Astronomers note spring began at 10.36 p m Monday but Dauphin and much of the prairies felt earlier heat with five days of spring through Wednesday. Temperatures soared to 42.9 degrees above zero and snow melted into puddles while streets cleared of snow after a brief late week snowfall.
The Herald tours Dauphin as Nutra and businesses renovate extensively. North Star Oil builds a 30 by 64 foot garage and 28 by 80 foot warehouse on First Street NE while replacing old tanks. Monarch Lee Cupenne Penns Sire fully modernizes offices with plywood walls and a brick front slated this summer. The bus depot adds a 30 foot rear extension and modernized waiting room and washrooms. Dent Bros. garage completes showroom upgrades. CN Rail station receives a two tone green interior, soundproofed cubicles, and wiring upgrades. Stelck’s Hardware updates furniture, linoleum, wallpaper, canopies, fluorescent lights, and new signs.
Dauphin area plans a new radio station CKDM to begin about August 1 with 250 watt operation on 1230 kilocycles. Studios will be above Paul’s cafe, Main Street. The project includes farm news and farm programs, local news and events, live talent, weather, and potential network affiliation after growth.
A proposed 1950 Dauphin Agricultural Society short course will run April 10 to 14 for district youths aged 14 to 19. The five day program covers grain, poultry, forage crops, swine, sheep, feeds, public speaking and citizenship with demonstrations, tours, films, talent and a final address by J R Bell. Applications for forms are due April 1.
John Gardner received the scroll of an Honorary Life Governor of Dauphin General Hospital at a board meeting. He completed 22 years as a director and served as president of the board in 1947-48 and 1948-49. presentation was by W. R. McCormack, a life governor of the hospital.
Dauphin rural council approves a 52 mill general tax rate plus school levies and street lighting in sections of the municipality. The plan itemizes 30 mills for general municipal purposes, 7.5 mills general levy, 2 for municipal commission, 8 for road tax, 3 for road debentures, and 1.5 for over‑expenditure with varying school rates across groups A B and C and district unions. Total 1950 assessment at $2,498,951 and expenditures estimated at $182,455.59 with breakdowns by ward and major items such as drainage and bridges.
