The Dauphin Horticultural Society hosts Stan Westaway of the University of Manitoba to advise Dauphin homeowners on landscaping their grounds. This follows a prior service a year ago when FOS Wey visited to share individual guidance.
The Dauphin-Ochre Area school board won approval to expand Whitmore school with eight classrooms and an auditorium after meeting with Minister of Education Stewart McLean. The board argued for more space to replace the third floor, serve rising enrollment, house Indian students, and avoid closing the old Whitmore building, while the department cautioned future North End projects if space remains at Whitmore.
W. T. Volkers announces a $210 000 project totaling for new classrooms and auditorium will not alter this year’s budget. Indian affairs covers 78 750, provincial grants 52 500, with 78 750 borrowed from area capital reserve. Repayment begins 1965 and ends by 1967 or 1968.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce plans five resolutions for the Manitoba chambers of commerce annual meeting in Winnipeg in mid April. One asks Ottawa to start plans for a second Trans Canada highway and another seeks an alternate northern route into Winnipeg for traffic from north western Manitoba.
A week of local ice sports showcased in pictures highlights players, teams, and venues across the region. The pictorial spotlights performances, community support, and upcoming events at rinks and arenas.
The Dauphin Volunteer Fire Department fought two minor blazes this week. A tar and oil fire near a CNR roundhouse west of Dauphin caused no damage, then a second at the Hatch construction site east of town was controlled before firefighters arrived. A separate large fire at a Manitoba Power Commission Warehouse near Sifton early Sunday destroyed the building. Dauphin crews were not summoned. Damage was estimated at 500.
The Dauphin area experienced a balmy week with nights around minus one. Spring showed signs of arriving but March still has a way to go. A .02 inch rain aided snow melt. Forecasters warn colder spells may follow in some regions and could reach us.
The Dauphin-Ochre area school board approves a 1 043 760 budget for 1961 up from 935 000 the prior year. Salaries rise 18 000 to 530 000 representing half of expenditures. A 234 225 special levy is required, up 14 641 from 1960.
Fred Snaith arrives in Dauphin to lead the Dauphin Consumers Co operative. He previously managed the Portage Consumers Co operative branch in MacGregor for fifteen years and has a background in community service and wartime Royal Canadian Air Force service in Alaska. He and his wife have two children, Janice and Jimmy.
Dauphin Junior Chamber members held Bosses Night on March 15 at the Boulevard Hotel with sixteen Jaycees and seven Brandon members led by Don Purdy and Martin Crustie. Winnipeg executives attended. Abe Schellen addressed the sale ring. Future Dauphin projects include Teen Age Safe Driving and a joint District 2 conference in Dauphin April 16–17.
The F W Bumstead Plumbing and Heating business marked half a century of service to Dauphin and area on March 2. Frank W Bumstead arrived from England in 1908 and began in Dauphin, later purchasing the department and expanding through several sites before establishing his 1947 building on Second Avenue North. His son George A Bumstead joined after World War II and took full ownership in 1955.
The 52nd Dauphin ladies bonspiel ended with two late Friday games. Laura Mayer of Dauphin and Neta Campbell of Cardale tied for the grand aggregate with six wins and one loss, forcing a playoff for top honors. Campbell’s Cardale rink also won the Sneath event while Mayer’s rink took Eaton honors. other prizes went to Hamildla, Elphinstone, Grandview and Pembina club teams with multiple placements.
More than 300 members and friends filled the town hall for the twenty-second annual meeting. The group heard of assets totaling 1 060 293 dollars as of December 31 1960 and loans to members reaching 764 193 dollars. Officers reappointed and awards given for long service followed the program.
