450 Stolen From Legion Clubroom

The Dauphin branch of the Canadian Legion reports a break in discovery by caretaker Bill McKay. Thieves took about 450 dollars plus cigarettes and candy between midnight Saturday and 6 am Sunday. RCMP investigation ongoing with no arrests by Wednesday. This was the largest theft since prior break-in series two years ago.

Lions Sponsor Easter Seals Campaign in Dauphin

The Lions Club of Dauphin launches the annual Easter Seals drive distributing 3,000 letters with Easter seals. The effort aims to aid crippled children and expects further events soon. Red Cross Blitz Planned for Dauphin Residents

Red Cross chair R N Dodds prepares a March 29 blitz with about 100 volunteers targeting Dauphin households. The goal is 3500 locally and 412800 province wide, with cards issued to local businesses and a committee list led by Dodds and several community groups contributing volunteers.

Dauphin General Hospital Reports 1956 Surplus Amid Higher Patient Days

Secretary-manager A J Schmiedl reports at the annual hospital meeting that patient days rose in 1956 from 2 272 to 2 310, yielding a surplus of 1303 76 after revenues of 174 142 06 and expenses of 172 838 36. The hospital handled 96 operations and 87 deaths, with 2 023 admissions and 247 births.

IOOF and Rebekah Lodges Present March of Dimes Cheque

IOOF lodge No 36 and Alexandra Rebekah lodge No 13 to present a 2736 dollar cheque to the Society for Crippled Children and Adults in Manitoba. Funds raised in Dauphin during the March of Dimes campaign mark a significant increase from 1925. The presentation occurs in Winnipeg during the Grand Lodge of Manitoba session, with Dauphin officials and lodge members attending at the Oddfellows Temple.

Dauphin Regional Festival to Seek $2000 Arts Grant

The Dauphin Regional Festival of Allied Arts will apply to the Canada Arts Council for a $2,000 annual grant. Hospital Needs Stressed In Report On Facilities

A. J. Schmiedt and E. W. Hawkins reported a 1956 operating surplus of $1,303.76 for Dauphin General Hospital while voicing concern about future needs. They urged architect study for a new wing, with possible use of present facilities and a 60‑bed addition, funded partly by government grants. Some doctors urged quicker action, citing potential national health plan impacts on bed requirements.

Ochre Council Passes Speed and Waste By Laws for Dauphin Beach

At the March 12 meeting the Ochre River council passed two by laws for Dauphin Beach. By law 2150 sets a 15 mph speed limit with immediate effect once signs are erected. A waste container by law requires metallic 24 to 30 inch tall, up to 20 inch diameter cans with tight covers. The council also seeks a $200 grant from Public Works and Manitoba Power Commission lighting two new street lamps. An extra parking lot lot 14 plan 2 near No 5 highway north end will be reserved for summer use to ease weekend traffic.

Conciliation Officer Appointed for Dauphin-Ochre Dispute

Hon W C Miller appoints John G White as conciliation officer to bridge talks between the Dauphin Ochre area board and Manitoba Teachers Society district No 3 over a stalled salary schedule. Negotiations began last November and a stalemate occurred in February prompting provincial involvement. White expected in Dauphin next week to meet with both sides.

Ochre River Council Okays Bridge Prep Near Ochre River

At the March 12 meeting Ochre River council approved a public works request to survey the Ochre River crossing site for a potential bridge on the Ochre South road five and a half miles south of the village. The plan seeks a 1958 grant to share construction costs and includes site inspection and cost estimates by the department. The council also requested three extra street lights from the Manitoba Power Commission for Makinak and sought unincorporated village grants of 200 for Ochre River and 100 for Makinak. Wages were set for W. E. Grant as drag line operator and Harold Watson as motor patrol and or HD 10 tractor operator.

Women appointed to Dauphin General hospital board

About 40 Dauphin General hospital governors met on Friday March 15 to elect three directors for three-year terms. New director Mrs. D A Ross joins two returning directors E W Hawkins QC and Vernon H Rampton. Hawkins will chair until April 1957. Remaining terms cover three, two, or one year assignments for other members. Life governors listed include nine named individuals.
