Moscow Proposals Prompt Western Summit Talks

The Kremlin proposed a joint four power program for outer space arms talks and a UN summit agenda while warning the West against pressuring eastern Europe. Bomb Near Florence Missed Warhead Despite TNT Charge

A US Air Force B47 dropped an unarmed atomic device near Florence. The bomb lacked its warhead but contained TNT intended to trigger the reactor, causing a blast that opened a large hole and damaged houses and shops. Six people were injured, including four children, though none severely.

Queen Mother Elizabeth Returns From Global Royal Tour

The Queen Mother completed a six week round the world journey from Canada to Australia and New Zealand. Crowds greeted her upon arrival in London at Heathrow Airport with Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, and Prince Charles in attendance. Prince Philip was visiting West Germany.

Diefenbaker Welcomed by Record Crowd in Dauphin Rally

Prime Minister John Diefenbaker addressed a 4000 plus crowd at Dauphin airport hall on Monday afternoon. He spent 2.5 hours in the city including a 45 minute speech with Manitoba figures Senior G S Thorvaldson and Trade Minister Gordon Churchill present. He urged reading the Farm Price Stabilization Act and defended PC modifications for the average Canadian.

Area Board Approves Dauphin Collegiate Course Changes

The Dauphin area board at a regular meeting approved major changes to Dauphin collegiate offerings. Settlement unlikely in Canada railway contract dispute

A conciliation settlement appears unlikely in the contract dispute between Canadian railways and 15 unions representing 130 000 non operating railway workers. Neither side has indicated willingness to agree on how to competitively address the basic issue involved.

Advance poll dates set for Dauphin electoral district

Canada’s second federal election approaches with a three day advance poll in Dauphin on March 27 28 and 29 from 2 pm to 10 pm in the Burrows block. The act restricts pre election voting to those likely absent on election day and to armed forces RCMP and commercial travellers among others. Advance poll certificates available from the returning officer and election clerk at polling time for eligible urban electors.

Nominations closed with three candidates listed for the Dauphin riding for the March 31 election. R. Elmer Forbes, A. Thomas Warnock, and Fred S. Zaphtny will run as Progressive Conservative, Liberal, and CCF respectively. Remaining parties did not field contenders. Manitoba totals show wide field variation. Red Cross Blitz Set for Friday March 28

Dauphin residents urged to expect a Red Cross blitz on Friday evening from 6 30 to 8 30 guiding house to house canvassing for year round humanitarian work. Organizers led by R N Dodds recruit from service clubs churches and benevolent groups with a goal of 3000 toward a provincial 433000 target. Householders asked to leave outside lights on to signal a donation or send contributions to Dodds or treasurer S J Heggie.

Unconditional Grants Increase for Municipalities in 1957 Plans

The Manitoba government shifts unconditional grants to mid summer with payments on or before July 31. Totaling 2.5 million dollars, grants are based on 3 dollars per person from 1956 census figures, with 2.3 million for organized municipalities and 200 thousand for unorganized areas and Indian bands funds. Winter Snow Stuns Manitoba With 5.9 Inches Shown

A young newcomer predicted no more snow but March 13 brought a fresh burst of flakes. Snowfall totaled 5.9 inches with 2.9 inches last Friday and 1.9 inches the following day. Weather stayed fairly pleasant before the cold spell. Roads had reduced visibility during the heaviest snow.

Dauphin Plains Credit Union 19th Annual Meeting Held

Better than 250 persons attended the Dauphin town hall for the Dauphin Plains Credit Union society limited annual meeting. Registration began at 7 30 p m with Ed Tower directing a short film program. Vice-president R H Thomlinson opened at 8 p m as reports showed rising shares deposits and loan demand with a 3 percent dividend.

Dauphin Agricultural Society Spring Activities Begin

The Dauphin Agricultural Society plans a busy 1958 program with Easter Week short courses for 60 boys and 60 girls ages 14 to 20. Packaged events include seed grain and bacon carcass shows April 10-11, fat stock show and sale May 14, and a Northern Manitoba purebred sale.
