Col Barker dies in crash at end of aviation career

Col W G Barker VC world famous World War I pilot dies at 26 in a crash while testing a new biplane near Itawa Canada mourns a Dauphin hero whose aviation career advanced commercial flight. He married Jean Kilbourn Smith on June 1 1971 and is survived by his widow, daughter Antoinette, parents in Chicago, siblings and grandparents. He shot down 52 enemy aircraft on the Western Front and earned the Victoria Cross and numerous honors before his death while pursuing aviation innovation.

Bonazew Brothers On Trial For Murder Of Boraschuk

The Bonazew brothers George and Alex face murder charges at the Spring Assize Court in Dauphin for the death of Gabriel Boraschuk occurred during his wedding festivities. Post mortem findings show severe blunt injuries and internal damage. the trial heard testimonies from witnesses including the best man Anton Skorobohacz and Sandy Jabuk. The case resumes with crown witnesses and jurors seated. a separate plea of guilty was entered by a man aged 60 for crimes against his daughter.

Dauphin council refrains from appealing O'Brien verdict

In a special session the Dauphin town council decided not to appeal the O'Brien versus Town of Dauphin judgement awarding Mrs. Lotte O'Brien 1000 general damages 12 special damages and costs for a March 16 1929 sidewalk fall. Mayor Robson chaired with Couns Brewer Taylor Whetter Bennett Solomon Lepper and King present. The decision followed a Winnipeg KC Williams opinion noting the appeal risks outweigh the amount awarded. Mayor Robson reported awaiting Major Hall interview on central heating.

Concert line up at Dauphin Collegiate features a program including an overture, O Canada, a chorus Come Where the Lilies Bloom, an aria O Who will Get the Downs, orchestra pieces, a dance, the play The Gold Circle, a trio The Three Old Maids of Lee, and a final dance.

Dauphin Irish Society Marks St Patrick Night

Members of the Dauphin Irish Society staged an evening of alternated Irish dance, music, and drama on March 17 in the town hall to celebrate St Patrick. Proceeds of about 1 dollar were donated to the W.H.A., with a program featuring Easman, Bishop, Padley, Davis, McMurray, Eastman, McNabb, Mulligan, and a school playlet An Irish Tongue. Later, Miss Catharine McKillop died March 16 after four months illness. she was born in Quebec in 1849 and long served as a caretaker for her brother.

First social evening at Women’s Institute Building draws crowd

The Women’s Institute Building hosted its first social of the year on Friday March 14 with games and music. Laughter filled the hall as a delicious lunch followed, and credit is given to the hostesses Mesdames Paddock, Adam, McCaule, Martin, Carlson and Handorson for the evening’s success.

Miss Verna Rose Crowned Queen in Ochre River Contest

Miss Verna Rose daughter of Mr and Mrs John L Rose and a high school student won the Queen title in a two week Ochre River contest with 36 800 votes. Vera McCorquodale finished second with 6 7 votes and four other contestants were Wilma Bryan Joyce Martin RN Jawra Lounsbury and Lizzie Gilroy.
