Plane missing after attempting emergency landing over sea
Overseas report from the RCAF casualties officer cites Italian information that Ward’s aircraft, last seen in formation over the sea, ran short of fuel and attempted to reach a nearby airport near enemy lines. It is suspected he was captured after landing.

Fire Brigade Responds Twice in February Chimney Fires
In late February the fire brigade dealt with two chimney fires including one in a rural division. On March 12 they extinguished a chimney fire at W. R. Hornby’s on Third Avenue S.W. Then on March 15 two alarms at the homes of William Metz and Mrs Lorne Mitchell. Two more calls came on Tuesday to Gordon Porter on Fourth Avenue S.E. No serious damage. An early Wednesday alarm to H W R Gemmel on Vermillion Avenue found a blazing chimney with no injuries.

Ration Book No 1 Expiry and Coupon Changes
Ration Book No 1 will not be honored after March 31. Spare C coupons 10 to 26 and all B and D spares in book 1 will expire. spare C No 9 for butter expired March 14. Butter coupons in book 2 become valid March 10 and 20, valid until April 30. Citizens should remove the old book cover with the holder's number and keep it safe in case book No 2 is lost.
Juvenile Delinquency Charge Leads to Fines and Supervision
A 23 year old serviceman was charged with contributing to juvenile delinquency and giving liquor to a 17 year old girl. Detained by RCMP near residences at 12 30 am March 11. He paid a $75 fine plus $5.75 costs or three months in goal. The girl was committed to supervision at a juvenile court hearing the following day.

Philip Stark Promoted to Major in Army
Promotion of Capt Philip J Stark to major was announced. Stark from Dauphin serves with the 100th Basic Training Centre at Portage la Prairie. He studied at Wes ley College and taught at Virden and Luxton Winnipeg before enlisting. wife and family live in Winnipeg. A sister Mrs Frank Adams resides here.

A January 18 letter from Lieut E T Wensberg aboard H M C S Dauphin expresses heartfelt thanks to the Town of Dauphin and Mrs Hawkins and the town ladies for a generous gifts shipment. The gifts arrived in good condition though late for Christmas due to irregular movements.

Mary Bready Dies in 89th Year in Dauphin
Mrs. Mary Simpson Bready widow of Joseph R. Bready died March 9 at her Dauphin residence aged 88 in her 89th year after a long illness. A private March 12 funeral was held at Riverside cemetery with Rev. J. A. Berridge officiating. She helped found and led many social welfare groups including the local Child Welfare clinic and Mothers' Allowance board and served as a leader in the National Council of Women. Her work spanned Grace Methodist and United churches and multiple civic initiatives in the town.

No. 7 Monster Carnival Shines Despite Bad Weather
The monster carnival at No. 7 B. & G. S. hall drew crowds and money despite snow threats. Townspeople braved the storm for a second night of games of chance, bingo, a fortune teller booth, and a pay-as-you-dance jitney. Aubie Jacob led the band while station personnel supervised all activities.

Cecil Patterson Long Missing Believed Dead
Mr and Mrs Hugh Patterson learned from Ottawa on Tuesday their son Cecil C Patterson RCNVR now presumed dead for official purposes after nearly two years missing. He enlisted as a wireless operator Oct 22 1939 and was reported missing overseas Apr 1 1941. Born Calgary Jan 2 1917 he lived in Dauphin from age ten and loved radio and hockey.
