Local hockey clubs set to meet in Manitoba Mediate championship series with Dauphin King count of 6-6-4, Pine Falls Foxwarren leads 2-0. Billy Murray netted the winner in a 7 6 thriller in Dauphin playoff action. Game time 8 30 Thursday at Pine Falls with a possible third game to be announced.
A Malagasy meeting aimed at uniting independent Congolese states into a neutral capital city, Leopoldville, drew Kasavubu and Tshombe closer though Gizenga’s absence cast doubt. Delegates protested the 4700 Indian troops deployment as UN efforts falter amid Matadi port loss and Canadian signallers seized.
The Dauphin Lady Curlers stage the 52nd annual bonspiel with 48 rinks, just below the 1960 record, at the DMCC rink. Out-of-town teams from Winnipeg and provincewide entries join 22 Dauphin rink entrants. Ed Johan and Ernie Bennett handle the draw. Mrs. E P. Bennett chairs the bonspiel with the Afternoon and Kilts clubs. A banquet at the town hall featured Mrs. G C. Dowler as MC and a St Patrick medley of songs and skits focusing on goodwill.
Town council approved a principal plan for a $109 575 storm sewer and surface drainage project to serve the east section. Engineering reports propose starting in 1961 with $55 000 to $60 000 funded from public works and a $40 000 loan from a reserve account, repaid over ten years via a mill levy. A meeting with government ministers will be sought to secure approvals and pave the way for the trunk and main lines listed in the detailed cost breakdown.
Seventeen year old Jeff Oliphant of Dauphin has been chosen by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs review board in Winnipeg to join a United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth in July. A senior at Dauphin Collegiate, he serves as DCT student council president and Hi C Club president, with broad community activity and prior provincial representations. The Dauphin lodge sponsors support for his trip, a second Manitoba recipient after 1960.
Delores Myers 19 of Grandview earns Manitoba’s spot as provincial delegate to the national 4H conference in Washington DC set for April 22 to 28. A Tamarisk beef calf club junior leader since 1954, she has four years as club executive and is active in public speaking and Grandview activities.
Premier Duff Roblin announced the Manitoba Savings Bonds go on sale March 20 with denominations of 100 2000 and 3000. The issue bears 5 percent interest and matures April 1 1971 with redemption on demand after six months. Sales are limited to Manitoba residents and registered Manitoba entities. funds raise will be used for Manitoba growth.
Dauphin residents praised the past week for ideal weather aiding the annual curling event. Mild conditions and good ice eased play as participants enjoyed reliable outdoor sport amid favorable roal conditions in the region.
The Dauphin Public Library hosts a loan display of old masters drawings and paintings from the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The Elizabeth Dafoe memorial fund supports librarian training, honoring Mrs. Dafoe’s National Library Board work. Volume notes show 24 senior registrations with four cancellations and 19 junior registrations this past month.
Local Red Cross fund campaign opens with volunteers canvassing business and residential areas. Judge D. A. Ross chairs the campaign with D. J. Cumberlane as secretary treasurer. Rural donations urged to Dauphin Red Cross Society Box 460. Community groups assist in the drive including CWL branches and Legion auxiliaries. Over 200 bedding and clothing items issued to fire victims since January.
In Dauphin on March 12 a Ukrainian People's Home program commemorated Taras Shevchenko's 100th death anniversary. J T Sytnick chaired. J Bilous spoke on Shevchenko as poet and thinker who urged Ukrainian rights and justice.
Bob Koons won best actor for his role as Francis Monnerie in The Hidden River at the four day Dominion Drama festival in Winnipeg. The Dauphin Little Theatre entry directed by Lou Kliman of McCreary earned regional honors with Koons praised for his presence and commitment.
Town records show an early start to building activity with 33 500 in dwelling permits and 1 150 in repairs this year, plus a 4 000 institutional project at Mackay Indian residential school. Woolworth store renovation nears completion with April opening planned at Main and Fourth. A major station renovation by Canadian National Railways extends two months and will convert the Barker station into a dual purpose facility.
The Dauphin Men’s 63rd Bonspiel wrapped Sunday with most finals decided. Ron Balak’s Grandview rink captured the Grand Aggregate with seven wins and two losses while finishing third in Modern Teeners. Ab Puchalski’s Gilbert Plains squad won the Modern Cleaners primary, defeating Russ Jackman. Lorne McCallum and Gord Lang battled to a late finish in the T Eaton major, with McCallum edging Lang. The Hotels trophy went to Labatt’s Cantin Russell Downs defeating Jack Hunter.
