A local newspaper lists upcoming community happenings for a gala month. Invitations go to theatres drive-in venues and organizations to submit entries such as dances, live music, skating nights, golf tournaments and street games for calendar coverage each week.
The Dauphin Rural Municipality ended 1955 with a deficit of 31,105 dollars, due to overexpenditure on public works. Auditor Eric M. McCullagh notes wards and bridges spending exceeded authorized estimates and joint provincial projects and drainage work were undertaken without budgeting. 1954 had planned a 46,403 dollar improvement, with a 4,133 dollar surplus, but tax collection shortfalls offset gains.
The Town Council moved to block a private firm from acquiring Riverside Cemetery or establishing a commercial cemetery in the district. John Heel of Westlawn Memorial Cemetery urged two plans including purchasing ten acres beside Riverside or taking over the cemetery, with indegent burials to be housed there. Council passed resolutions urging the Rural Municipality of Dauphin to refrain from turning Riverside or approving any commercial cemetery in the area.
City officials in Dauphin discuss a town wide shopping festival set for June. Merchants will buy ten dollars worth of City-Wide Sale coupons as an initial sign up, with a manager hired for the signing and canvassing period.
Canon T W Wilkinson of St Pauls Anglican church denounces a private firm plan to acquire Riverside cemetery or open a private burial ground. He says the scheme will raise the cost of dying, questions its economy and public benefit, and warns selling Riverside without an alternate burial site would create an undesirable monopoly.
Auditor notes optimistic trend in tax collection but warns of impaired finances due to over expenditure. Current arrears total 102 785 63 and 192 751 16 in overall debts, with carry-over of 75 000 to the public and 149 000 including reserves. Urges council to limit contracts to annual budget and ratepayer capacity.
Emergency observers report vigilance for a rabies outbreak in Dauphin area as no cases have appeared locally. Dr. Owen McGuirk outlines Manitoba’s rabies history, protection measures, and a map detailing 32 cases since 1951, with most in wild animals and a rising link to domestic dogs.
Snow totals over the past two weeks amount to 4.1 inches with cold winds and low temperatures. Highs reached 27.1 on March 1 and 25.3 lows on March 7, while last year’s comparable period recorded a high of 39.6 on March 8 and a low of -29.8 on March 2.
Ratepayers in Dauphin will vote April 16 at the town hall on by law No 2364 to authorize borrowing 25000 by debentures for purchasing the old post office building and renovating the town hall. The plan, first read February 22, sets six equal annual installments from 1957 to 1962 with five percent interest, plus an advance poll April 12–14.
The fourth annual weed control conference will be held in Dauphin town hall on Wednesday March 21 from 10 am to 4 pm. The Manitoba department of agriculture joins the Dauphin Agricultural Society for a joint event. Experts from Manitoba Weeds Commission University of Manitoba and other agencies will discuss herbicides like 2,4-D MCP TCA IPC and management of wild oats and other farm weeds. District farmers are urged to attend.
A house-to-house canvass begins immediately marking the opening of the Red Cross campaign. A local Red Cross meeting finalized plans for a drive in town and rural areas. Chairman Robt N Dodds said appointments in rural towns are being completed after weather delays.
Premier D L Campbell says Manitoba Hydro plan to build a steam generating station will be near Winnipeg. Dauphin is urged by town officials as a potential site while fuel costs transmission costs and cooling water supply shape final choice. The board studies several sites and installation types with transmission costs key to economics.
A two day civil defence familiarization program begins Thursday at 11 a.m. in Dauphin for sub area No 14 covering Dauphin and district. John Bryce of the provincial advisory defence planning commission is the main speaker with demonstrations films and talks by Art Humphreys O Needham Stewart deWilden and G Sawyer. The course aims to standardize planning and train those who will hold key emergency roles.
The Dauphin General Hospital governors meet in the hospital board room this Friday at 8 30 p m for the annual gathering. Nine directors face election this year with four members appointed by the Dauphin town and rural council. Veterans William Cruise W R McCormack and John Gardner hold posts up for renewal. Eligible governors include Dr W G Ritchie Mrs H A Breslaw Miss Rhoda Tucker Dr C S Robertson W H Rampter and E W Hawkins QC. A year in review report will be presented and anyone may join as a hospital governor for 3 a year or 25 for a life membership.
The Area Board learned that Sifton high school will keep its grant after an omission in grade three pupil enrollment was found. Minister W C Miller told Winnipeg visitors the full grants will continue, while Makinak requires one more pupil to qualify. The board may transfer pupils to improve efficiency.
