Prizes Awarded at Winter Fair and Short Course

The Winter Fair committee hosted a banquet at 636 with supper by La Verene rue Chapter LODE. Mrs O B Heacup performed Man in Manitoba, Dauphin Boys Band debuted under Mr Jack McMurray, and Dr Ganne presented cups for sheep and dairy cattle judging to Berjah Hill and Russell McKillop. Poultry judging honors went to Nene Thomson. Allan Reilly won Horse judging. John Presunka and Fraser McQuarrie earned prizes in beer and Hee judging respectively. The event featured remarks by J H Evans and prizes awarded by D McDonald and R B Hunter, with close contest results and a special $5 bonus to Nelson Shoemaker.

Death of Alex Esplen in Levering Park Barn Fire

Local news reports the death of Alexander Esplen near sixty after a barn fire at his Levering Park residence. Neighbors rescued livestock before the fire brigade found his body in the loft. cause is uncertain though a match and hay ignition are suspected. Survived by his wife Ellen Porterfield and two sons Melville and George, with several brothers. Funeral held at St James United Church with Rev H M Lyon officiating and interment at Riverside Cemetery.

Elks Dog Derby Promises Fast Musher Pup Race

Elks host a dog derby on Saturday March 17 at 2 p.m. for the Cameron Heap Cup. The course runs from the Cameron Heap warehouse along 1st Street SE to 3rd Ave SE and around the ball park, with youths urged to enter via Mr W G Cameron. Western Canada grain pools mailed 28 000 000 to members last week.

Old Timers Celebrate Thursday Anniversary Dinner

Dauphin Old Timers Association held its Thursday March Sth anniversary dinner with John Seale in chair. Mrs D Hamilton oversaw the meal as music and song followed with C N McDonald and family performing and Mrs W J Boughen playing piano. An Old Piddlers Contest crowned Andy Miller, and officers were Jas A Campbell president and T T Malcolm secretary treasurer. Dancing continued after 11 p.m. into the early morning.

Court Session Reviews Thefts and Tax Case At City Hall

Judge Bonnycastle held a quarterly session with many attendees. The Duhard wolf theft appeal was allowed. Crown could not support the conviction. King vs Guyot on 1921 income tax ended with Crown proving its case from original records. Estate of Eugene Abraham accounts were presented. winding up by sale discussed and adjourned. Town Council Approves Installation of New 100 kw Unit

After two meetings and a report from Major N. M. Hall the council accepts the engineer’s plan for a 100 kW steam turbine at the plant. Estimated cost 76 606 dollars plus 5 000 for distributing service and 5 dollars for heating unit first stage. solicitor to draft by law for 80 000 dollars to be submitted to taxpayers. Manufacturers indicate no units between 390 and 500 kw available. town opts for smaller unit to fit needs.

Hospital board probes mangling machine claim

A special hospital board meeting reviewed a claim against the laundry equipment installer for alleged inadequate protection for operators of the mangling machine. No decision on liability for Miss Coter's injuries was announced. the claim will proceed. Other items note the Old Age Pension bill's third reading in the provincial house and remarks by Premier Bracken.

Governor General to Visit Dauphin in April

Intimation received by Mayor J W Skinner that the Governor General of Canada and his wife the Viscount and Viscountess Willingdon will be in Dauphin about April 2 and will stay for three hours. A reception and entertainment program is being arranged in their honor with details to be announced later.

Robson Family Mourns Loss Of Joseph Edward Robson

The town and district mourn the death of Joseph Edward B Robson aged just over 30 after a lingering illness at his home. Born in Minden Ontario in 1897 he moved to Manitoba 28 years ago and helped run the family farm in Dauphin. Funeral held at St James United Church with multiple ministers officiating. Interment Riverside cemetery. pallbearers listed.

Dauphin Oratory Contest Tonight at Mackenzie School

Four contestants vie for the Dauphin representative in the constituency final at Mackenzie school auditorium tonight at eight o clock. Edward Campbell and Mona Craik from Dauphin Collegiate join Lloyd Castle and Elva Milne from Wilson River school. A brief musical program accompanies the orations and attendance is invited but small children cannot be admitted.

Two Rinks Attend Pas Spiel for Carnival

Dauphin citizens rode a special train to The Pas for the dog derby and bonspiel. Two Dauphin rinks joined by players and officials, including Dr Harrington and C B Steen, traveled with accompanying guests. The Dauphin Intermediate Hockey team also left for games during the carnival under coach Walter May.

Fat Calves Bring Top Prices At Dauphin Auction

The Dauphin Agricultural Society calf sale at Kellys Barn Friday afternoon saw strong demand for well conditioned calves with prices from 12c to 97.50 for top lot. R B Hunter of Swift Canadian Co won the first prize with a 97.50 bid plus 25 prize, totaling 122.50. Other buyers included Scrase and Son Baird and Sons and A Bennett. Hospital board bids farewell to Geo Kennedy on Winnipeg departure

On Wednesday evening the hospital board members and Dr J R Gunne F E Simpson KC L J Tritschler and acting Mayor A A Brewer presented Geo Kennedy superintendent of the new hospital building a briar pipe and tobacco pouch as he leaves for Winnipeg. Johnston the board president praised Kennedy for his services. Kennedy said he made many friends and hoped to visit again in the summer. A late Dauphin Theatre show Saturday night with The Fortune Hunter ends at 10.
