Midgets to Meet Portage in Midget Playdowns

Midgets advance to a second round clash with Portage in the Midget playdowns. The match is slated for Portage ice this Saturday with a possible second game there.

The Annual Short Course runs with morning poultry and livestock judging by boys and girls. Afternoons are spent at the Rural Youth school with hogs and poultry judging. Hon. T. A. Crerar told a Dauphin audience that Canadians must grasp the war's gravity. He described London blackout hardships, noted France’s manpower in uniform, and warned Britain and France could threaten global civilization if defeated. Three Cars Stolen Over Week-end Recovered Quickly

Three cars were stolen over the weekend and recovered within 24 hours. W S McPhedrain of Sifton reported a car stolen Saturday night during carnival hours and found near the Winnipegosis highway. J W Monson’s vehicle vanished Monday night from Fourth Avenue and reappeared a block away on Fifth Avenue. Harvey Buckwold’s car disappeared Tuesday night from in front of the Pollen block and was later found nearby. Police note most thefts are joy rides and highlight the cost of tracing thefts.

Makinak Resident Fatally Wounded In Unusual Accident

Ephraim Therrien of Makinak was fatally wounded Saturday afternoon when a rifle on a load of firewood discharged as he tried to catch it. He died Sunday night in Ste. Rose hospital. An inquest returned an accidental death verdict. Survived by wife, two small children, parents, five brothers, and two sisters.

The Winnipeg Winter Club troupe of 40 skaters staged a colorful exhibition at Dauphin s seventh annual ice carnival on March 9. Highlights included Patricia Chown Robin Lee Margaret McInnes Frank Sellers and Barbara Wilcox. Dr Geo D Shortreed Dies in Grandview

Dr Geo D Shortreed a prominent Grandview physician and longtime Liberal party leader in the Dauphin constituency died Wednesday afternoon from coronary thrombosis. His last public appearance was March 9 at a meeting chaired by Hon T A Crerar.

Forty Rinks Compete in Novelty Bonspiel

Twenty rinks turned right and twenty left on the draw sheet as play in the two way novelty bonspiel at the Curling Club completed the first round. Les Kitson oversaw the draw. the first two evenings produced a full quota of mixed rinks and mixed shots with 40 entries. Games continue this week to decide main and consolation event winners.

Three Small Children Burned in Winnipegosis Farm Fire

Eleanor four Irma two and William Ernest five months, children of H F Janzen, Winnipegosis district, are in critical condition at Crerar hospital after a blaze destroyed their farm home five miles north of the fishing village on Monday March 11. Mrs Janzen saved the children with help from J H Buller as Dr A E Medd assisted at the scene. The fire, which started about 11 am, left the home and an adjacent barn as total losses.

Juveniles Meet Minnedosa In Playdown Here Tonight

In the second round game the Dauphin Juveniles host Minnedosa at the local arena Thursday March 14 at 8 15 pm with Minnedosa holding a one goal lead from Monday 2 1 at Neepawa. Coach Pinkie Davie says the team is tuned up to their best.
