Women from the Ukrainian community gathered at the Ukrainian People's home to honor a poet with a concert featuring vocal and instrumental numbers and readings. A special lecture was given by Hrebeniuk, a local parish priest of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox church, and Mrs. J. A. Yurkiw delivered an address.
Annual Opera Day of the Women’s Musical club at Mackenzie school featured Vera Fryer presenting on the Metropolitan Opera formation and workings. Mrs. D T Strickland and Mrs J M Douglas organized music with performances by Mrs W L Breadner and others including Carmen pieces and choral numbers.
MacKenzie public school classes reached their quotas in the war savings drive. Grades one and two tied for first place with $245 and $24 respectively, while a “Bombers for Britain” chart tracks stamps as planes. Total school sales since September amount to $1546.50 with Tuesday and Friday stamp days and a parade for winning classes.
A Dauphin era column lists service members and relatives on leave or traveling. Cpl Vernice Craig and AB J F Young visit parents, while many others plan returns from Winnipeg Lac du Bonnet Vancouver and overseas. Local staff and families host visits and holidays in Dauphin, Winnipeg, and Portage la Prairie.
The Etiquette Club sponsored by the Dauphin Youth Service Council held a Saturday afternoon tea in the Collegiate auditorium. Mothers, friends, and representatives from youth organizations attended as girls presented skits on proper social and business conduct. Senior counselors Mrs. A. M. Moore and Miss Anne Smith led the event with refreshments served to over eighty guests.
Edythe Elizabeth Sobey and Earl Richard Thompson were married Friday evening February 25 at Erskine Presbyterian manse Ottawa. The couple were attended by Doris Sobey and AC2 Frank Thompson. A wedding supper followed at Chateau Laurier before a honeymoon trip to Winnipeg and Dauphin.
The oldest Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Alberta is the Broad Indians of St. Paul Residential School near Cardston. Their members have names like Dan Bad Arm and Don Weasel Moccasin. Their fathers served in the Great War and 2,300 brothers across Canada are serving in the Armed Forces.
Private Herman Wilson of the Royal Canadian Infantry, based at Fort Osborne barracks in Winnipeg, is spending a two week leave with friends and relatives at Dauphin and Gilbert Plains.
Engagement of Florence Hazel Douglas to Staff Sgt. Robert Harold Nelson announced by Mr and Mrs Wm M Douglas of Oak street Dauphin. Wedding planned at St Pauls Anglican Church on April unknown date.
Mr and Mrs B Skaife of Ethelbert marked their 45th anniversary on March 1 after marrying in 1899 in St Helens England. They moved to Canada that spring. He served at the Ethelbert post office since 1917 and she works with the C W A C and Red Cross. Their family includes son Douglas in the RCAF and four daughters with 27 grandchildren.
A historical note warns that Canadian and global wheat surpluses are shrinking. The United States boosts wheat acreage, imports substitutes, and plans to import 175 million bushels from Canada this year. By Aug 1943 Canada held 601 million bushels. by Aug 1944 projected to drop near 400 million.
The article counters the view that prairie farmers are earning more now. It shows four wartime years 1940-1943 yielded an average cash income of 469 million dollars annually, 13 percent below the 1926-29 average of 538 million. The board backed postwar Rural Municipality work and promised to help rural council. Rural electrification was discussed with plans to obtain details and approach federal authorities for farm power installation.
At Dauphin General Hospital births include a son to Mr and Mrs Lyle Green on March 1 a son to Mr and Mrs Robi Hand on March 1 a daughter to Mr and Mrs Metro Bilyk of Pine River on March 2 and a son to Mr and Mrs Walter Fernawski of Gilbert Plains on March 5.
A daughter was born to Lieut. and Mrs. J. H. H. Nicholson at Brandon General Hospital on March 6. Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Chittick (nee Ruth Nicholson) welcomed a son, Garry Kipling, in Calgary on March 2.
