Winter Fair Opens with District Attendance in Dauphin

The 6th annual Winter Fair and Short Course of the Dauphin Agricultural Society opened with over 100 boys and girls in stock judging and 24 district women in poultry judging. Prof. Herner led poultry demonstrations and a large adult class, as Dr J R Gunne opened the event. The program includes stock judging across sheep, cattle, horses, swine, and calves, plus a new seed grain exhibit and lectures by MAC staff and Prof Harrison.

Retired CN locomotive engineer Robert W James ends 48-year career

Robert W James, a Canadian National locomotive engineer, retired after 24 years with CN and 48 years in the engineering field. His career began in England, then Canada with multiple railways before 25 years with Canadian Northern and CN. He will travel to Saskatoon Edmonton Vancouver and then return to his home country.

Dauphin District UFM Annual Ball Charms Town Hall

The Dauphin District UFM annual ball held Friday evening in the town hall drew a jolly crowd. Ben Boughen and Rowan Durston organized finances while Lee Chute and Mrs J McRoberts led decorations turning the hall green and gold. Guests were greeted by L. D McKillop and W. J Wickes. luncheon ran under Jennie Strang and Mrs Akers with a committee from across the district. Denny Kells served as master of ceremonies and Ed Robson’s orchestra provided lively old time and jazz.

L.O.B.A. Honors Life Membership at Feb Meeting

At the L.O.B.A. regular meeting in the 1.C.C.F. Hall on Tuesday evening February 26 a life membership certificate was presented by Worthy Mistress Violet Reid with an address by Past Worthy Mistress Bella Weir. Mrs. Alguire thanked the lodge and members sang she's a jolly good fellow. A lunch followed with social time.

Normal School Concert Delights Large Crowd

A full house at Mackenzie auditorium welcomed Normal school students for an evening of music and one act plays. Highlights included Jessie Klym as the old woman in Going to the Workhouse and Margaret Stevenson in A Scene from the French Revolution.

Winter Carnival Queen Crowned at The Pas

Miss Laura Robson of Flin Flon earns queen title after tallying 131 725 votes in The Pas carnival. Annabelle Haldorson of Winnipeg places second with 108 500 votes and Gladys Chute of Sherridon is third with 97 375. Entries from Winnipeg Regina and Saskatoon marked a widely publicized contest.

Man Kills Wife Then Takes Own Life in Rural Manitoba

In the Keld District near Dauphin, Roman Kaschuk, 35, shot his wife 28, then used his bare foot to trigger a second shot before dying. The wife died at Dauphin General Hospital the same evening. An inquest was deemed unnecessary. The family included four children, ages 16, 8, 6, and 3.

Prisoner J Tennant Escapes from Dauphin Gaol

J Tennant, a prisoner held in Dauphin gaol, escaped custody Tuesday morning while working inside the building. He is serving a twelve month sentence for stealing automobiles and had completed about one month. provincial police are now searching for him.

Provisional School of Instruction Opened for Dauphin and McCreary

A provisional School of Instruction for Dauphin and McCreary is underway this week under Capt Foster and Sergt Major Clark of Lord Strathcona Horse RC. Dauphin classes meet Mondays Fridays Saturdays and McCreary on Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays. Evening sessions run 7 30 to 16 236. The Commanding Officer urges all officers and NCOs needing qualification to attend.

J G Struthers Dies After Long Illness in Dauphin

Jas G Struthers aged about 62 passed away February 26 after prolonged sickness. A Dauphin resident since 1908 he worked in retail groceries and served as country court clerk. Survived by wife two sons in Winnipeg a daughter at home and three sisters and a brother. Funeral held at United Church with Rev Lochead officiating and interment at Riverside Cemetery.

A mass meeting at the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Hall on February 23 condemned Bolshevik tyranny in Ukraine.
