Attlee government holds narrow UK general election majority

Britain's Labour Party returns to power with 314 seats and a razor thin 9 seat working majority in the 625 member Commons. Most cabinet members win re-election. Liberals shrink to eight seats while Communists lose all. Final tally suggests a fragile government with possible confidence votes.

Frankie Lozinski Crowned Queen of Ice Carnival

Frankie Lozinski was crowned queen of the 1950 Dauphin Commercial Travellers ice carnival with 399 000 votes, far ahead of runner up Orysia Bilous who had 275 000. Corinne Hamelin and Effie Boyko followed with 185 000 and 17000 votes respectively. Lozinski earns a Chicago trip to appear on the Don McNeill Breakfast Club around March 16. Crowning occurred at both shows with H H Hill and Mayor W L Bullmore presiding. The Ice Club of Greater Winnipeg produced a successful carnival drawing strong local attendance.

U S Cuts Ties With Bulgaria and Balkans

The United States broke diplomatic ties with Bulgaria and pulled its 49 member delegation from Sofia. It froze assets of Bulgaria Hungary and Romania in the United States over delays in compensating American claims and Bulgaria's demand to recall Ambassador Donald Heath.

Miners To Court Over UMW Walkout And Fines

Miners and John L. Lewis's United Mine Workers were ordered to appear in a Washington federal court to answer a contempt charge tied to the continued 372,000 member strike. The government seeks heavy fines possibly up to 1 million dollars daily if convicted. Peace talks continued with little progress on the union demand for a $2 daily wage increase.

Committee Plans 1950 Short Course For Easter Week

The Dauphin short course committee met to plan the 1950 Easter week event. Howard Campbell was re elected chair with Dave Hill as co chair and supervisor. Crysia Bilous named secretary and new committee chairmen were elected for billeting entertainment program livestock prizes publicity and women’s committee. Aimed to fix publicity and turnout issues from 1949 the group proposed a year round concert night to stabilize revenue and outlined the 1950 program for provincial agriculture approval.

Dauphin Town Council Eyes Radio Station Proposal

Mayor W L Bullmore announced a special Thursday meeting at the council chamber to hear a Dauphin group’s proposal to establish a radio broadcasting station. The move follows discussions with representatives seeking to start the station.

Ice Club Parade Delights Travellers Carnival Crowd

The Dauphin Commercial Travellers' Association staged its 16th annual ice carnival at the local arena with Queen Frankie Lozinski and four princesses watching from the royal stand. Ice club performers led by Rupert Whitehead presented Count Esterhazy themed routines and dances, featuring skaters Gwen Lentz Joan Baldwin Wilma Cunningham Ivy Smith and Denes Pataky among others. Proceeds benefit maintenance of travellers playgrounds on Third Avenue Northwest and Fifth Avenue Southwest.

New Look Front Page At The Dauphin Herald

The Dauphin Herald announces a new front page without advertisements starting this issue. It notes historic front-page ads by McDonald and Oliphant from 1919 and later by W. G. Provincial Fruit Show slated for Dauphin in 1952

The provincial convention approved alternating the fruit show among Winnipeg Brandon and Dauphin with Dauphin hosting in 1952. J H Delong led the push noting northern crops and good local facilities at D M C C hall. Delegates included Mrs F W Robson Mrs J A McPhee and W J Boughen. The new provincial horticultural department will promote home grounds contests and a lecture tour by F J Weir is planned for Dauphin.

Dauphin Council Set To Decide Daylight Saving Time

At the March 13 meeting the Dauphin town council will decide whether to adopt Daylight Saving Time. Delegations may speak. 7 30 p.m. in the council chamber. The decision follows a federation letter urging uniform dates across Canada.

Old Water Mains To Be Replaced In Town

Town engineer authorized to replace three steel water mains with cast iron on Third Ave NE Third Ave SE and Sixth Ave SE plus extensions to Mountain Ave and First Ave SW The project costs 9400 with 1725 already in the budget Council transfers 2500 from unforeseen and draws 5175 from the cash surplus fund to cover the balance.

March Temperatures Show Wild Swings From Blizzard To Sunshine

The Dauphin area opened March with a midnight blizzard and by noon the weather eased to bright sun and light wind. The week logged a cold 41.5 below zero and a high of 26 above with March 1 1949 recording 35 above. Temperatures compared unevenly with last year but trended toward milder days later in the period.

Letellier Takes Lead In Intermediate Final

Letellier built a 3-1 first period lead and held it to win the series opener over Dauphin. Moose Dionne and Wilf Beaulieu each scored twice for Letellier as Tony Loiselle stopped Dauphin shots. Marty Malcovitch scored twice for Dauphin with assists to Bill Murray and Hugh Kerr.

Council Denies Sidewalk Petition On Edgar Avenue

The Dauphin town council Monday night refused a petition for a sidewalk on Edgar Avenue. It asked sidewalks to be laid next to the property line, not beside the road with a curb and gutter. The matter was sent back to petitioners and planning committee questions were referred to the finance committee for review.

Canadian Education Week Observed by Local Schools

Next week March 5 to 11 marks Canadian Education Week across Canada. Dauphin’s three elementary schools host open house next Thursday from 2 to 5 pm with classroom displays and tea by home and school groups. Parents may discuss school issues with teachers. Collegiate plans for in‑school activities without a visiting day.
