Commissioner visits Dauphin volunteer fire dept

Fire Commissioner handieke made a surprise visit to the Dauphin Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday evening. Fire Chief Gordon Harrison noted the alarm raised and the crew arrived quickly, impressed by the unit’s speed. The commissioner, on a province wide tour, outlined four summer training programs for the local team.

CKOS-TV-1 Opens In Yorkton Week Of Broadcast Event

Residents in Dauphin and Swan River await Friday June 24 for CKOS-TV-1 official on air date. Opening telecast from Yorkton studio includes test patterns, O Canada, messages from Diefenbaker and CBC, city mayors speaking, studio tour, CBC network join, and Profile at 10 p.m. section 2 covers feature stories and ads.

Most Local Seeding Nears Completion in Dauphin Area

Reports to the agriculture office show about 5 percent of serial crops seeded in Dauphin while districts north of the city such as Pine River and Woon POgasis report near 60 percent seeding. Early crops show good growth though flax suffers from bacterial seedling blight and heat, with some fields plowed and resown. Forage crops progress well with recent moisture and warm weather, while home garden vegetables face cutworm infestations and replanting in parts.

High Cost Of Interest For School Borrowing Concerns

The area school board approved a 175000 borrowing bylaw to cover summer salaries and current expenses. Trustees noted accumulated borrowings reach 327242 this year and require later tax revenues. A C Matthews urged seeking earlier grants, while the secretary-treasurer warned high interest costs reduce classroom space and urged a two month grant/tax disbursement policy. Further study aims to propose a new financing plan.

Retires After Half Century OL Service With CNE Here

Packy McFarlane retires after fifty years with the CNR Dauphin yard and related Canadian railroad positions. Born in Purple Valley Ontario he began as a line checker in 1910 with Joe in Dauphin and worked at Fraserdale Kamsack The Pas and Church. He and wife Alleta Bennet of Sawyerville have five children and will holiday in Ontario for a month.

Sereda Couple Observe 57th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs John Sereda celebrated their 57th anniversary at their Dauphin home on June 7. Both born in Austria they emigrated in the late 1800s to Canada. They married at Sifton Greek Catholic church in 190? and raised three sons and five daughters. Family trays and neighbors joined in a surprise dinner as she proudly showed her house plants.

Open House at Tween Lakes Motel Weekend Event

Mr and Mrs Glen Forfar announce the opening of a new section of Tween Lakes Motel with an open house this Saturday June 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. The Tween Lakes Restaurant and Tween Lakes Esso Service Drive In nearby host a gala reopening with Jack Hilborn and George Robinson in charge. Free soft drinks ice cream and gifts with gasoline purchases. An evening dance on the hardtop in front of the restaurant and station features Bev Munro and his orchestra.

Ochre River WI To Award $50 Scholarship Again

The Ochre River Women Institute announces its annual $50 scholarship will be awarded again this year. Any former Ochre River student taking a complete grade 11 course at the DCTI is eligible. The scholarship goes to the student with the highest average in the June examinations.

Rotary Tag Day Raises 228 Dollars for Summer Camp

The Dauphin Rotary Club reports 228.39 collected on Saturday to help run the summer camp at Silversands beach. The camp serves youth groups and provides a fresh air outing for children without access to a lake holiday.

Local Blood Donors Clinic Slips On Attendance

The June 16 blood donors clinic at the town hall drew 345 donors over six hours, averaging 57 per hour. Afternoon turnout was 140 and evening 205, with the evening session the busiest. organizers lament lower totals than 361 in fall and 381 in April 1959 and warn Dauphin General Hospital used 180 pints Jan through March. Prospective donors are urged to attend the November clinic hosted by Dauphin Legion branch No 20 and Mme Red Cross to meet demand.

Indian Students End School Term at Mackay Residential School

With the third complete year finished since opening in 1957, 138 Indian children left Mackay Indian residential elementary school for a long summer break. They boarded the CNR train Monday evening and will detrain at points along the route to Hudson Bay including Theraspord and Churchill in northern Manitoba.

High Scholastic Standings Recognized At DCTI Honors Assembly

The DCTI honors assembly named students achieving term averages of 80 or higher. Assistant principal A J Drebinsky introduced the 1960 61 student council executive Jeff Oli phantom Brian Lesko Carol Crawford and Dianne Palmer and commended retiring leaders Paul Potoski Ken Ganczar Noreen Shick and Sharon Kong. Merit and honor certificates were presented by officials including W T Volkers C D Voigt to those with perfect attendance and distinction.

Tiny Operetta at Dahlgren Studio enters 20th year

The 20th annual tiny operetta at Dahlgren Studio staged at Mackenzie auditorium featured 31 five year olds in Sleeping Beauty. Adapted by Mr and Mrs Dahlgren the three act play included action songs and dances. Cast included Sandy Gow as King Debra Simulska as Queen Shirley Chesney as Princess and Dong Stephen as Prince Charming.

Pidskalny Diamond Wedding Anniversary Observed

Mr and Mrs Joseph Pidskalny of Ethelbert celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on June 12 at Sts Peter and Paul Catholic church. Mass by Rev Soter Pidekalny followed by Jubilee services. Mr Pidskalny born 1877 in Western Ukraine, emigrated in 1897, and Melania Sawchak born 1883, came to Canada in 1894. couple married in Lifton in 1900 and ran a farm in Ethelbert area before leaving farming in 1940.
