Agriculture Minister Gardiner told the Commons that Canada should adopt a more direct approach with Britain to open markets for Canadian goods. He said talk should target one or two individuals in London and stressed he is ready to speak frankly rather than be polite.
The Ket River flood in southern Manitoba, the worst in a century, is officially over as water falls from 18 feet exact. The disaster, triggered Operation Blackboy with 5,000 servicemen and 50,000 volunteers, displaced about 150,000 people and caused up to 60 million dollars in damage. Ottawa approved 12.5 million for initial rehab.
Trygve Lie told 59 U.N. members that world peace hinges on seating Communist China and bringing back Russia to U.N. meetings. He warned progress depends on resolving China representation and ending the Cold War, with mid July as a judging deadline. Russia and allies have walked out of 31 U.N. groups protesting Nationalist Chinese delegates. France and Egypt may shift Security Council votes to oust Maoist China.
Council approved the runway extension to serve Canadian Pacific Airlines, with turf sowing on 4% acres of R E Forbes land. It backed Manitoba Motor Transit's Dauphin to The Pas bus franchise, seeking board support and a letter. The company plans radio-telephone equipped vehicles for reliable emergency communication and asked endorsement. Other items include public pamphlet drops for Armed Forces Day, sidewalk projects on First Ave SE and Third Ave NB, and a June 24 tag day by the Dauphin Lions Club.
Last week saw about two inches of rain in the Dauphin district with .36 inch on Wednesday . plus 1.32 inches on Thursday and .11 on Friday. The week’s high reached 84.5 degrees on Monday while the low was 37.3.
A Monday night town council meeting approved a motion to formally thank all Dauphin residents who contributed time, transport, equipment, money, furnishings, meals, groceries, and other assistance to evacuees from the Red River flood.
May permits total 32 with estimated building costs of 139 900. First five months 1950 see 43 permits valued at 181 471, down from 65 permits valued at 326 777 in 1949. Thirty two May permits include 20 for new dwellings valued 125 000, nine for repairs 10 900, and three for alterations to commercial buildings 4 000. No new commercial buildings in Dauphin this year.
The Dauphin Ochre school area No 1 rural field day, postponed twice for bad weather, is now scheduled for Monday June 26 at the D M C C grounds, officials announced this week.
Dauphin Commercial Travellers association advances the Travellers parade for the summer fair on July 24 25 and 26 with Travellers Day July 2. Five bands from Dauphin Gilbert Plains Birtie Minitonas Norquay Sask and possibly Regina Junior Lions will perform. Floats from multiple groups are organized along with clowns and three peanut men selling nuts along a route from Fifth Avenue South to the fair grounds.
Dauphin fans will see two big sports days at the D M C C grounds with invitation and open baseball tournaments. Northern Senior league teams Roblin Grandview Gilbert Plains and Dauphin will compete in the invitation events, while open tours may draw local intermediate teams and others. Prize money totals 750 for Elks day and 1500 for the July 1 event, with details on divisions and prizes for baseball, girls softball, children’s races, and barn dances to close both days.
An estimated 400 in goods and cash were stolen from Eli Bay Ltd. on Main Street. Entry was gained through a skylight, thieves climbed a pole to the floor and left by the rear door. About 33.50 in cash and various clothing items vanished. hats and shoes were found scattered. Break in discovered at 10 am Sunday by Harry Bay. An attempted entry at Petersen’s tea room and bakery was noted nearby.
A Dauphin delegation asks town council for annual funding to create a 100 piece concert band within five years. They project $1,500 yearly costs for instruments repairs music and uniforms and seek a mill levy grant similar to parks and library funding. Council will consider in the 1951 budget with current $500 band allocation this year.
The Dauphin district club concert featured 13 entertainment numbers by 13 clubs at the Gilbert Plains industrial hall attended by over 300 people. Acts included Ashville Wind Jammers then Kalico Katies and Duck Mountain calf club, plus Minstrelettes and other groups. Master of ceremonies was C Bailey of Dauphin.
Winners of two local Canadian history speech contests in Dauphin were announced. In grade 8 Shirley Crawford won the girls class with Bob Hunt heading the boys class. 15 contestants took part. The collegiate Macneill Memorial prize went to Elgin Engen with Shirley Fendick as runner up. judges and presenters are named.
Farmers in the Red River valley hit by floods request a large supply of 60 day oats for seeding after land dries. Manitoba agricultural representatives have been asked to help obtain the oats. D. J. Hill asks farmers with 60 day oats for sale to contact him promptly for shipping this year.
The Red Shield Appeal has established a $2,500 quota for the Dauphin district, urging local residents and organizations to contribute funds to support relief efforts and affiliated services. The drive aims to mobilize volunteers and meet the target within the campaign period.
