The town acts on zoning for the business and industrial area including blocks facing Avenue and Second Avenue SE. Fire limits remain. most areas allow smaller building values under 3000 dollars, with residential setbacks and frontage rules. Garages and multi dwelling rules set back and frame construction required for larger apartments. Also references an agricultural fair.
Dr W L Watson opened a new dentist office after serving as head of the medical clinic at No 2 Air Command Winripe. The notice notes his prior assignment and new business venture.
A boat capsized on a lake near Vermullion river causing a man a dog and a companion to struggle to shore. They paddled to the river edge then walked after hours of searching through reeds to reach dry land along the beach.
Druggist Jack Ball purchases the Rexall drug store partnership. Ball has long been a Dauphin resident and Manitoba University trained pharmacist. The store traces back to Mrs Robson and managers Lyall McMorran and L A Browse after Robson's death in 1933.
Miss H Cunningham and Mrs K Campbell join new roles while Miss Margaret Fulton transfers to high school physical training. New hires include Miss Mary MacLean Miss Mae Knox Miss Betty Smith Miss Laura Thacker Miss Jean Lockhead and Miss Dorothy Bru rmitt. Two vacancies remain with additional collegiate staff moves and new teachers listed.
The council will host a banquet for Union of Manitoba municipalities delegates on June 19. It approves a $100 extra for town cleanup and garbage pickup. Future plans transfer garages to Travellers Club for a children’s playground. A town hall decoration is deferred due to budget limits. Residents urge government to ship foods overseas and requisition food if needed. The next meeting is June 20. the mayor attends Vancouver and treasurers Winnipeg conventions.
Robert C. Aller, a former Dauphin student, won a Vancouver School of Art first year student scholarship. The award supports decorative and applied arts studies. Aller is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Aller of Dauphin and among Vancouver students chosen to design sets for the Vancouver Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Graveling has used 2600 yards with Vermilion and several streets already done. The council will seek provincial funds for Main Street hard surfacing while detours are in place. Complaints about speeders and lack of street lighting prompt traffic and dust mitigation talks.
Gordon M. Churchill MLA will speak Wednesday at 9 p.m. DST in the town hall. J Sigvardson from the department of education will be a guest. A film showing the large school area plan in operation in Alberta will be presented.
The Dauphin Orphans baseball team, captained by Bill Smigel and coached by Lindsey Capling, fell 5 to 4 in ten innings to Gilbert Plains in a Sunday game. The season opens amid plans for a regional league with Ochre River and Ste Rose, as Eclipse, Old Dauphin, and Melton also field teams nearby.
On National Farmers Day Friday June 21 at the fair grounds the Elks host a monster sports day with a $400 prize for a baseball tournament. First class teams from nearby towns are expected to enter alongside horse racing $125 prize, girl softball, midway shows and local talent acts. The Dauphin Boys Band performs all day.
City council and parks board will meet to inspect the old river bed and discuss transforming it into a lake. No more dirt will be dumped while residents urge action after 25 years of complaints. A dam at River Avenue and a water dam at the bridge would create a steady water supply.
The Lions club won the Odor Memorial Cup at Dauphin Country Club in a close annual clash with the Rotarians. Thirty six members from both clubs competed with final results undecided until the last ball. Don Mitchell of the Lions claimed low gross with 87, while John Bogle and Joe Johnnesson of the Rotarians tied for second at 88.
The month saw a reduction in complaints with seven squor violations logged. Total fines amounted to $245 and $51 in costs were recorded for the town. During the month 23 persons were involved.
Last week brought minimal moisture with just .24 inches of rain, marking one of the driest periods on record. The period's hottest day reached 83 degrees amid a hot dry wind, contrasting with the prior week’s conditions.
A Dauphin ministerial delegation asked the school board for a weekly half hour of religious education, to be offered under the school act. Protestant churches support a shared course. Roman and Greek Catholics would have separate instruction. No decision yet. July meeting planned. The board also discussed road repairs for school vans, bicycle racks after 275 bikes were counted, and welcoming 102 beginners for September with MacKenzie and Smith-Jackson enrollment noted. School opens August 28 to complete 200 days by December 20.
The town buys a Horton steel reservoir for over 20000 dollars to supply 8 million gallons daily. The 72 foot diameter, 40 foot tall tank will stand near the chlorinating plant on land formerly owned by William Cruise, purchased for 700 dollars. A bulldozer arrives to start on the dam with rental plans for Winnipeg firms and trenching equipment, plus a 80 cent per foot rental to Grandview after town work ends.
The Spences welcomed a baby girl at Salt Point on May 29 and set out by gas boat to Crerar hospital 25 miles away, where a baby boy arrived two hours later. Both babies and parents are reported doing well.
The third weekly Lipton's Limerick contest winner is S. L. Layfield from Suite 15 Mall Plaza apartments Winnipeg. The ten week contest offers a $100 prize each week for completing the final line of a limerick with seven weeks remaining.
