After three days of heavy rain the countryside remains flooded with roads impassable and water pressure low in town. Dam at Deep River head gave way causing farm flood damage, while extensive river flooding required residents to take precautions during reconstruction and water supply restoration efforts.
At the June meeting the directors reviewed plans to expand stock exhibits with a 24 by 80 barn to house around a head of dairy cattle. Last year’s sheds will be reroofed, Baby Conference rooms prepared, and a Grandstand Free Acts platform started this week. New events include tournaments, games with All Nations Baseball Kansas City, and horse races. Civic holidays set for July 10 and 11 from noon to 6 pm. A boys judging team will represent the society at Brandon for the Provincial Fair, led by Rey Loughren Alec Brown and Rus McKillop with R H Brown as trainer.
A sharp critic calls for aggressive action against the dandelion industry starter during the prohibition era. The remark urges the culprit to dig out the current crop with his teeth, reflecting harsh sentiment of the time.
The Wolverine and Mohawk Trail Ranger Camps host a Lawn Social beside the St. James Tennis Court on June 2 at 3 pm. Ice cream cake and lemonade will be served in first class style. Proceeds go to the camp set for the first week in July. Everyone is welcome.
A public meeting at the Methodist Church featured WD Bayley MLA promoting scientific temperance education. He described alcohol as narcotic, explained brain function affecting judgment, warned youths about small drinkers, and outlined a plan for 50 provincial school centers next fall with local committees forming to drive the program. Bayley will continue visits to camps and rural leadership courses in late summer.
Elmer Thompson organized a town hall charity dance last Wednesday in the Town Hall. The Nova Scotia Relief Fund gained about 50 dollars with broad community support. The Town Council provided the hall free and the McMurray Orchestra donated part of its services. Ticket sales and door receipts totaled 81 tickets for 40.50 dollars with 15.75 dollars spent on music and tickets leaving a net of 28.25 dollars.
A special Methodist meeting decided on a basket picnic for all Methodists and friends at Durston Park on June 18. The event, organized by the Ladies Aid convener Mrs E H Walker, includes transport by Dr Bewell W G White and P E McNeely and games by L Beer M Pocklington F W Woodward and F Watt. It also offers a social hour with Rev T Neville before he departs to Souris to begin duties as pastor on the first Sunday in July.
Rev Philip Duncan noted at morning service that the Presbyterian church in Canada would soon pass into the United Church of Canada. Manitoba churches had not yet voted on concurrence. A congregational meeting after service on June 21 will decide per session decision.
A two day session of the Review Commission explored school curriculum in the province with citizens presenting views. Delegates included Major C. K. Newcombe and others from Winnipeg and Dauphin. The panel discussed religious education timing, practical subjects, and the balance between academics and training.
Due to heavy rain the Agricultural Society postpones the annual plowing match. If weather holds the event will be held Friday June 1 at Jas. Blair's Ochre River farm.

The Alexandra Rebekah Lodge in Dauphin raised nearly 375.05 at a benefit night at the Dauphin Theatre on Monday. President Mrs H Cox led the event with help from Vice President Mrs W J Lowes and other members. the show featured soloists Miss M Stark Mrs E McNabb and Mrs D R Hamilton, pianist Mrs Garry Peebles violinist Mrs C Grubb and the feature film Dangerous Innocence. J W Johnston thanked the association, noting it was the largest single donation to the War Memorial to date.
Stan Darlington, a telephone line foreman, reported a light brown full grown bear appeared at the base of a pole on a mountain yesterday. He froze hoping the bear would ignore him, then slowly climbed down and distance himself quickly from the scene.
