Safety lane on Ver million street north of the Children's playground offers free checks of brakes lights and general car condition for all truck and car owners. Past tests showed older and some new models have defects. in year 488 cars passed with 314 approved and 174 flagged for fixes. More cars are expected this year as the lane opens to help owners remedy issues.
The housing situation remains critical with three or four would be tenants per listing. Limited to one or two room suites, few country houses near airports require cars. Authorities expect conditions to worsen as summer renters return from vacations and the beach.
This week three new signs appeared in the north end of town to alert motorists to slow down for children crossing near the playground. The signs read Playground Drive Slowly in bold black letters on a white background.
Reports from Smolensk and Zhitomir say Red Army forces are seizing the initiative on the Moscow front with heavy fighting and breakthroughs against German lines. Britain and the United States coordinate aid and diplomacy as Hopkins visits Moscow to discuss Lend-Lease and relief efforts.
S F Dingle received the appointment as superintendent of the Dauphin division of the Canadian National Railways. He has been assistant superintendent since March 1939 and earlier held key roles at Grand Trunk Pacific in Winnipeg. Dingle is active in Manitoba athletics with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and resides with his family at 26 6th Avenue N E Dauphin.
Workers from the Provincial Good Roads department began tearing up the old surface on No. 5 highway east of town. They will lay a new hard surfacing mixture over the old, with an expected completion in three to four days of good weather.
A consignment of new barley, the first of 1941, arrived Monday July 28 at National Grain Co. Watson Bros., farmers northeast of Dauphin, delivered the load. The barley is a variety bred for combined production, yielding 40 bushels per acre and weighing 50 pounds per bushel.
M P W J Ward says he has contacted Ottawa to confirm if the Duke of Kent will tour Dauphin during his inspection of the Commonwealth Air Training plan. Wing Commander Cameron backs a potential visit for the official opening of the new air school buildings at McKillop airport north of Dauphin.
Dauphin observes a civic holiday on Monday August 4 with business closures and special post office hours for boxholders and general delivery. The usual half holiday is not observed on August 7. Third Dauphinite earns pilot wings under the Commonwealth Air Training plan at Saskatoon No 4 Service Flying Training School.

The Dauphin district reports no serious car accidents on the Clear Lake highway during the past week end thanks to persistent RCMP patrols. Officers issued warnings and prosecuted speeding in restricted zones near east and south air schools and Wasagaming as traffic volume rose this summer.
About 150 officers and men from the Algonquins northern Ontario mechanized infantry regiment based at Camp Shilo will visit Dauphin Thursday noon for a mid day meal at the Tourist park during a Swan River route manoeuvre. They will return Saturday noon.
Three Dauphin golfers reached final matches in the eighth annual Clear Lake event with two taking first prizes. O C Monk Steele won first flight by defeating Babe Pratt and G McLaren of Brandon. Bowman and Harrington split the senior honors until Bowman won 4 and 2. Bobby Osborne captured the Murphy trophy for the men’s championship among 128 players. Mrs B P Pellenz of Winnipeg won the Buffalo trophy in the women’s division, with Mrs Stuart Campbell as runner-up.
Town council, led by Counc. McLean, heard that Lake Edward level drops threaten supply. Daily inflow could fall from 2,000,000 to 500,000 gallons if shrinkage continues, prompting pushes for metering next year. Present use runs about one million gallons daily. meters could cut it by one half to two thirds.
