Playground on Vermillion Street transforms derelict lots into community spot

Brisa commer of Vermillion street and Third avenue spearheaded by two organizations plus Town council turned a former condemned area into a park with five fenced lots. A $3,000 start funded a wading pool swings sandboxes slides and teeter totters for children with caretaker John Ginnell overseeing grounds and a coming bowling green and separate tennis court and clubhouse for adults. Attendance in early July shows 534 children the first week and 306 the second despite fair week.

17 Days Under Defence Regulations Defendants Found Guilty

Mike Rath a Swan River farmer was found guilty under section 39 of the Defence of Canada regulations and sentenced to 17 days in jail by His Honor Judge F E Simpson in Dauphin county court. Rath arrived in Canada in 1924, lived in the Swan River valley, and was naturalized in 1937. He previously served seven years in the German army, four on active duty in the last war. Prosecutor C S A Rogers K C led the case for the crown. Judge Bowman K C and J N McFadden K C represented Rath. Further charges are expected.

Search Parties Locate Elderly Woman Lost In Paulson District

Evening search parties combed the Paulson district for Mrs. Bigham who went missing as a heavy storm hit. Constable W. J. B. Graham led the effort with Theo Scovilie overseeing others. she was found early the next morning soaked and cold but in good condition after sheltering in the bush.

Dauphin to Host Large Service Flying School

Work has begun on two sites for a national service flying school at Dauphin, one to be a relief field seeded to grass. The project includes hangars and buildings, 108 aircraft in operation, and training for pilots using Avro Ansons Harvards Fairey Battles Spitfires and other large planes at three nearby sites.

Trade Board to Welcome Churchill Excursionists

The Dauphin Board of Trade will host passengers on the Churchill excursion train arriving in Dauphin Friday Aug 9. The train stops from 2 10 to 7 10 pm with trips to Clear Lake Riding Mountain and Dauphin farm areas. Guests will have time to see Dauphin town and shop.

Missing RAF Flight Lieutenant Douglas Middleton

Douglas Middleton, 25, of the Royal Air Force, is missing on active service in England. He is the son of Mrs. F. C. Middleton, formerly of Dauphin, now at Wasagaming. His brothers Donald is a prisoner of war in Germany, and Bruce remains in England with the RAF.

War Savings Drive Reaches Brooklyn Suburb For Canada Fund

A Dauphin drive for War Savings stamps raises a $10.00 contribution from Roy Kahne of Brooklyn New York. In a letter to the editor he praises the effort to stamp out enemies and asks the funds be sent to the proper department. Mrs Kahne, formerly of Dauphin, is Hattie Isa daughter of I Isaacovitch.

Dauphin Rotary boys camp enjoys lake side fun

Twenty two boys at the Dauphin Rotary camp on Lake Dauphin near town revel in outdoor activities. They built a rocky beach into a small pier, created a five hole golf course, and raft while supervised by George Reid. The week promises a bonfire weiner roast and Coca Cola treats as hiking and exploration lure the boys.

Woman Disappears Amid Suspected Murder Near Fork River

A Fork River woman vanishes while walking home from a snapping visit. Police hold neighbor John Rosmarenowich for questioning as searchers comb swampy terrain with a dog unit from Yorkton and volunteers. No body found as officers intensify efforts in extreme heat after she failed to return by evening.

Cyclist Injured in Highway 10 Collision at Ethelbert

Ethelbert cyclist Mike Shymski suffered facial cuts and lost several teeth when his bicycle collided with an automobile on Highway No 10. He was taken to Dauphin General Hospital for treatment. Heavy dust likely reduced the car driver’s visibility.
